What are your thoughts on this writing guide, IQfy? It seems to contain some great advice for a newb writer like myself, but at times Simmons seems to be more interested in jerking off dead writers than in teaching the reader how to write well. Sure, like he says in part 2, Hemingway was a great writer and worth studying, but people were writing fiction long before he was born and thus reading him isn't a prerequisite to becoming a great writer. Are most English professors like this?
Nothing Ever Happens Shirt $21.68 |
DMT Has Friends For Me Shirt $21.68 |
Nothing Ever Happens Shirt $21.68 |
TLDR?
No.
It isn't too long and you will read it.
>Dan Simmons
Never heard of him, so why would I take advice from him?
He's written several bestselling novels and spent years teaching people how to write before that.
I just looked him up... lol. Genre fiction isn't literature. He doesn't write.
Literature is any collection of written work
Fiction novels are a kind of written work
Therefore Genre Fiction is literature
Therefore Genre Fiction is literature and he does write
Literary fiction is literature.
Genre fiction is a failed screenplay.
You're hopelessly pivoting the line of discussion to MUH MOVIES (which genre fiction predates) because you got BTFOd by my clear, concise reasoning in the previous post. Shouldn't one of your pretentious philosophy tomes taught you that whataboutism isn't a valid argument?
>how to be a good writer you ask? Simple, have a 2 book build up to a zero G groomer sex scene.
>jerking off other writers
I mean this dude did insert a part in Hyperion that jerked off Gass for no reason at all, and all the shit with that John Keats robot, how are you surprised by this
I only take writing advice from books written pre-1970's.
why would I take advice from a man that has written one (1) good book?
I'm not reading Hemingway.
Why?
I don't read any literary fiction because it's boring.
The man who wrote "Endymion" and "Rise of Endymion" has no business telling anyone how to write.
Endymion was good. Rise was where things started going to shit.
it's funny how anonymous posters on IQfy will critique best-selling authors out of insecurity without ever writing a single sentence of their own
I'm published 🙂
Genre fiction is writing's McDonald's.
Well firstly writing something really low quality and bland still counts as writing literature.
Secondly, genre fiction varies in quality and some genre fiction being shitty doesn't make all genre fiction bad.
All genre fiction is bad. If it weren't bad, it would be literary fiction.
nice appeal to authority. you see the slop that's on best selling lists lately?
So is anyone here going to make a constructive post for people who want to learn writing or y'all just going to b***h about having to read something longer than the McDonalds dollar menu?
It's good.
