part of why people (including me) even use these platforms is to discover new content
        >No upvotes

Comments arent that bad (even though theyre just normie circlejerks these days), but recomms and upvotes are literal cancer. Did you know that the Finnish IQfy has had voting on posts for a long time now? You wouldnt want every IQfy post to have scoring, would you? It's absolute fricking cancer. People no longer write down their arguments, they just push a feeling button instead. Say something bad about women, you get -50 votes, nobody even explains why, say something bad about incels, people give you +50 points and you win gold account days. Voting is just thinking with your feet and wearing your heart on your sleeve which is what you dont want. Downvoting the shit out of incel posts has become a form of passive aggressive violence on Ylilauta
Admins like these features because they ADDICT. Yes, voting fricking addicts. I have written a book on dark patterns because it's alarming as hell that not even IQfy people understand the underlying psychology behind web design decisions.
          >up- and downvotes are useful for alerting other viewers to harmful content, e.g. scams
More like you dont even watch an intellectual video because some IQ 60 people got offended by it and downvoted it off your stream.

Multivitamins are a pretty generic topic. Nothing strange about that. You are the one making the connections. How many ads did instagram show you? How many products do you actually buy regularly or talk about with others? There is bound to be some overlap. Especially since that is exactly the job of targeted advertising. You likely have previously positivels interacted with content about food supplements, too.

            >Wait 30 days
            >???
            >Profit

I use Graphene OS and Instagram PWA in a container. I guess maybe my transaction information was sold, I can see that it'd be linked to the name on my card, likewise with the stalking that meta platforms do. There have been other instances that I can't recall but this is not the first time I have felt this way. I don't exactly have conversations with other people about vitamins, maybe my partner. But it happened within like, 5 mins of thinking about it as I ate the last two. Got an ad for the same brand too.

            Anonymous

It's mostly a coincidence. You ignore the countless times you talked about or needed a product and didn't see an ad for it, or saw an ad which had no connection to your recent experiences.
However the store selling the transaction information (what you bought, when, and where) is definitely also possible and would further help the 'correct' timing of the ad.

Youtube recs and comments aren't dark patterns, you fricking moron. Learn what the word means. Neither of these two are even that bad, one is for engaging in content you were interested in and the other was originally for helping find similiar content you were already looking for.

Dark patterns are explicitly about shit that is malious or otherwise trying to trick people to do things they otherwise wouldn't. Like fb trying to eat all your data and making it hard to understand what they are getting and hiding the opt-out fairly deep. Or an online store having an opt-out button on final buy page in a out of sight spot for paying extra money for something. Or like clicking through a bunch of confirm screens and the last one asks something people really don't want but they switch the colours of the ok and cancel button so most people will misclick as you parse colour long before text.

Trying to keep you on a service is not a dark pattern.

Dark patterns are deceptive web designs that hide information from users, particularly if said information is widely advertised/promoted to people. Or tricking people into additional services.
ie. the *free* service TurboTax was required to provide by law to those who qualify ... their "Freedom" and "Free Editions" were not free, (and not the aforementioned free service they were required to provide.)

i recently discovered youtube-local, which i'm really liking so far
    https://github.com/user234683/youtube-local/
it's a python-written web app that provides an alternative frontend to youtube, similar to invidious but intended for local/personal use. it has integrated sponsorblock, and the ability to proxy both metadata and/or streams through tor (i'm not using that part though, it's optional)
it's way, way faster than using regular youtube in pale moon, i've used invidious instances for a while, but they can be hit-or-miss sometimes, they don't seem to support the highest quality formats, and it doesn't have integrated sponsorblock (double checking that apparently the sponsorblock extension itself supports invidious, but since i use pale moon, i can't use the sponsorblock extension)
now i've only been playing with it for a day, so we'll see, but so far it's been pretty nice
