Did Jesus really exist?

It's reasonable to doubt that Jesus was a real person given that there's no hard evidence he was real, only speculation.

"Christ" is a specific title, that Greek-speaking israelites gave to Rabbis, and means "One who is Anointed" in accordance with israeli ritual
"Jesus" is a Latin rendering of the Hebrew name "Yehoshua" (Joshua) which was a fairly common name in Judea at the time
So, we have a man with a common name, and a common title. It would be like trying to find out if a character named "Dr. John" was real.
In all likeliness, Paul probably invented Jesus and gave him a common name to appeal to commoners as a way to sell his apocolypticist sect.

      >"We're a bunch of former tax collectors, fishermen, and farmers from Galilee/Ivdaea and we want to live and die for a Dr. John invented by Saul of Tarsus who is also being executed with us for his own invention"
does that sound plausible to nu-atheists?

If 300 years from now we'll have the son of a provincial general conquer Rome in the name of Spiderman, then I will concede my point.

Romans conquered things in the name of Mars. Therefore Mars must have been a real person.

Of course Mars was a real person. But not God. Maybe a famous warrior who got deified for his deeds. That's beside the point though. You moved the goalposts twice without directly addressing the argument because you have no response except for useless and childish banter.

We can’t know for certain, but there’s more evidence for the existence of Jesus than any other israelite in the first century AD apart from Josephus, and that’s only because Josephus himself wrote things.

What about Paul? There's more evidence for Paul than Jesus.

There's more literary mentions of Jesus than of Tiberius Caesar. Jesus, the man, absolutely existed by every standard we use to measure the validity of a person's life in that era. Whether He was the Son of God is a different issue

There's more evidence for Jesus than there is for all of Israel and Judah combined.

A mans name written down a lot isn't evidence of their existence, its just evidence that people wrote their names down a lot, which for a religious figure makes this argument dubious at best.

        >A mans name written down a lot isn't evidence of their existence
That's the best we can do for most people in antiquity.

For a lot of notable people throughout antiquity we at least had more than a name though. Most Roman emperors for example, had contemporary busts made of them, and their side profiles were often depicted on coins, so we have fairly good confidence they existed. Jesus just doesn't have this. We know what Caesar looked like, we have no idea what Jesus even looked like. For someone that was held in such high regard you'd think someone would've made a contemporary depiction of him of some kind
