Do people really still care about electronics being "thin?"
I thought we reached the peak of that trend several years ago. Why did they go with this marketing angle?

Advertising thinness is a copout for when you need to do one or both of:
    >distract from cost-cutting measures
    >distract from having made zero real advancements or improvements
Did you know that every iPhone since the iPhone 7 (where they removed the headphone jack and cited thinness as a justification for doing so) has been thicker than the 6s, which still had a jack?

If you’ve ever held an ipad pro you’d appreciate how they managed to make it not only more powerful but also just a bit more comfortable to hold. Because remember, tablets are meant to also be HELD so anything to make it not be a strain on the wrist is welcome

It weighs a lot less, but thinness is easier to show in an ad
Weighing less is kind of nice for something with an end that’s eight or nine inches away from where you’re holding it

      Anonymous

It's nice for design POV but the primary thing here is weight reduction, thinness is just the more observable side-effect.

iPads already weigh nothing. Who was asking for lighter iPads?

        Anonymous

–460g for something you can hold constantly isn't nothing, and that's just the lighter 11". 13" got about 100g lighter which is a big deal. Assuming they made the keyboard lighter too as some claim, they could finally reach the 12" Macbook weight now.

        Anonymous

it helps ergonomically. They didn’t have to do it, they could have just stayed with the current weights but tablets aren’t like laptops, so less weight is better if possible

          Anonymous

Less weight for laptops is better too, these are PORTABLE computers.

            Anonymous

Yes but laptops are usually set on a surface because how else are you gonna type efficiently? A tablet’s advantage is using it while standing up, and usually you’re holding it by the bezel with one hand and using it with the other. It’s in this use case scenario specifically that less weight is beneficial on a tablet

            Anonymous

You can use a laptop while standing too tho.

            Anonymous

Yes but it’s not the ideal way to use it. Laptops are also larger and you gotta worry about balancing, while tablets are just like carrying a clipboard around

            Anonymous

You have no experience with the Macbook Air if you think it's larger or harder to hold while typing than an iPad with a keyboard

            Anonymous

            >ipad with a keyboard
Ignore the keyboard, that’s secondary and not innate to the tablet. The raw tablet form factor invites people to use it much more easily than a laptop while standing, that’s the point of the tablet. Hold out a textbook vs a clipboard, the clipboard is easier and the textbook you’d want to rest on a table

Thin electronics aren't a feature anymore. At some point its gotta start feeling more like a detriment since it's harder to dissipate heat from the SoC and it makes the whole thing feel less roust. I think Apple can kinda work around these issues with titanium though. They're really going hard on marketing that

I am curious about how the new pros will hold up to the bend tests. I just about laughed my ass off when the presenter said that this ipad pro was stronger than the last gen

iPads immediately go into an inch-thick case, how thin the tablet is really doesn't matter. They've just run out of things to market it with, it's the same iPad it's been for the last five years but it has the latest processor.

Because it uses Titanium, and as far as I'm aware, Apple is the only company making phones and tablets with titanium because its usually pretty expensive to manufacture and mass produce, which is why you typically only see it used for aerospace applications normally.

Titanium isn't a particularly rigid material.
Strangely, steel tends to do better, which is what Apple was using on their iPhones before titanium.
Titanium is less dense and melts at a higher temperature than steel and aluminium. But these aren't really an issue on small consumer electronics.

        Anonymous

it's got a tiny low grade strip of aluminium around the sides try to keep up

      Anonymous

Why would it bend? The aluminium cage is still solid, there is glass on the other side and the stuff is full of components, so it's not like there is some negative pressure.

Because it uses Titanium, and as far as I'm aware, Apple is the only company making phones and tablets with titanium because its usually pretty expensive to manufacture and mass produce, which is why you typically only see it used for aerospace applications normally.

1mm less is almost 20% thinner on an already thin device. I’m surprised they managed to even shave off that much especially with that dual panel thing going on with their OLED display

          Anonymous

OLED is still thinner than LCD, and with a more efficient SOC and screen, they need less battery to hit their 10h target.

The battery is actually bigger on the latest model.

    i don't understand it.
i'd appreciate if my phone was thicker and had a longer battery life.
the design is moronic. my phone is so wide and unwieldy i often can't hit stuff on the bottom left corner with my thumb, without accidentally touching the screen with my palm. i have to shift my grip to use one hand. that doesn't have anything to do with it being thin but i still don't like it.
