>do you accept?. >no im good.

>”do you accept?”
>”no im good.”

It was literally that simple. Was Duke Leto just fricking stupid?

“Hey do you want a planet that will make you direct enemies with house Harkonnen? They are insanely wealthy have vast resources and are incredibly cruel. It’s actually very likely they’ll come and kill you”. “Gee that sounds great. Obviously this isn’t a set up from the emperor. I’ll take it”. Does no one else realize how insane this whole set up is?

Didn't he think he could outsmart the harkonnens?

No, don't know about the movies, but in the book it's a gamble. He tries to reach the Fremen, getting them to trust the Atreides and build strenght before the Harkonnens strike. Even then the Duke knows he's in a tight spot.

What are you talking about, do you know how much the Baron had to pay the guild to let 2000 ships get into Arrakis. The harkoneen are wealthy, they keep bringing it up in the book

it would have, actually. but leto is a man of rigid principles, its what kills him in the end.
i swear to god people dont actually read dune they just skim a summary.

No it wouldn't have, Atreides is strong but it would be butchered by the other houses when they collude to take them down since now there's a good excuse.
That's like if Russia nuked Japan and Taiwan cause it wanted to say F U to America. China and America would lose their shit

oh look, somebody who speed read 🙂

the entire reason the emperor colludes to take down the atreides is because theyve become too popular among the great houses.

if they refused the call, the great houses would not have attacked them.

Yeah bro, just say no to a direct order of the Emperor of the known universe, it's not like he's going to send his legions of fanatic supersoldiers to beat you into submission.

    You haven't read the book.
    >“Hey do you want a planet that will make you direct enemies with house Harkonnen?
They're already enemies of the Harkonen and have been feuding with them for centuries.
    >They are insanely wealthy have vast resources and are incredibly cruel.
The Atraides are also wealthy and the Harkonen are only so because they control Arakis. Also, the Atreides have a better military than do the Harkonen (hence the latter needing Sadukar to supplement them). The Atreidies suspected there was a plot afoot and were prepared but were betrayed by Yueh (who is a Suk and thought to be incapable of betrayal). Thufir Hawat thought Jessica was the spy.
    >It’s actually very likely they’ll come and kill you”.
They knew this but didn't think the emperor would risk galactic war in order to aide the Harkonen. They also didn't know someone as close to them as Yueh was the spy. The Atreidies thought the emperor was putting them in their place by stoking up the, again centuries long, feud and making it seem like they couldn't produce the spice the Harkonen had.
    >“Gee that sounds great. Obviously this isn’t a set up from the emperor. I’ll take it”.
They accepted it with great trepidation because they didn't have another choice. They were ordered to do so in the name of the imperium and saying no would have been characterized as a snub of the established order. Again, the Atreidies were prepared, they were stronger militarily than the Harkonen, but didn't realize the emperor was crazy enough to risk everything by destroying their house
    >Does no one else realize how insane this whole set up is?
I think it's pretty obvious you're a plotgay who watched the movie and can't understand the book (if you've even tried to read it).

does caladan belong to the atreides or are they giving it up to go to arrakis? could leto have gone by himself and left paul home so that even in the event of an attack at arrakis the planet would still belong to the house atreides? the harkonnens probably wouldn't have attacked at all if there were a spare atreides left behind to strike back at them.

the whole tread is bait but we're still replying, just like leto takes the bait and goes to arrakis. pottery.

Literally brought this up in the book
        >“There are several tangential possibilities,” Piter said. “I indicate that House Atreides will go to Arrakis. We must not, however, ignore the possibility the Duke has contracted with the Guild to remove him to a place of safety outside the System. Others in like circumstances have become renegade Houses, taking family atomics and shields and fleeing beyond the Imperium.”
        >“The Duke’s too proud a man for that,” the Baron said.
        >“It is a possibility,” Piter said. “The ultimate effect for us would be the same, however.”

OP's question is moronic, but I actually forgot if it was ever elaborated on, why they had to move to Arrakis personally.
Was it to better oversee the spice production? I mean just because the Emperor gives you new land to govern, doesn't mean that you have to move from your comfy homeworld, right?

      >Thufir Hawat thought Jessica was the spy.
They did my boy so dirty in the movies. He doesn't even show up in Part II

Leto explains to Paul that the key to surviving a knife fight is being able to see the knife. They know they're walking into a trap, but it's a trap they know about, they see what hand holds the knife. If they let on that they know it is a trap, the knife switches hands, now they can't predict where the attack will come from.

Their other option is to go renegade and become a guerilla house fleeing controlled space, but Leto is too proud for that. This is all reinforced by how Leto's father dies, as a matador in a bull ring. Leto think's he is clever enough to outsmart the Harkonnens and he just gets gored by brute force instead.

The biggest flaw the Atreides had was Thufir tbh. Thufir wasted a bunch of time trying to prove Jessica was the traitor which kept his attention away from Yueh. Thufir should have known what the Harkonnens had done with Yueh's wife and seen that as leverage they could use against him. He also didn't think the Harkonnen's would commit their whole treasury to war with the Atreides. The Baron tells Rabban that even if he squeezed Arrakis for every cent they could make off it, it would take 60 years just to break even on the invasion. Thufir expected a fight but didn't expect the Harkonnens to go that balls-out on the invasion.

Leto was also correct that the Fremen could be converted to an incredible fighting force, but he didn't have enough time to do that before the Harkonnen's showed up with their whole military + reinforcements from the Emperor's private army. Ultimately he was proven correct though, since his son won over the Fremen and rode off that military might to become Emperor himself.

When you see a knife you don't go towards the person with the knife. No one does that.

Yeah, it's kind of glossed over in the books, but because of how expensive space travel is most warfare is hit-and-run attacks on infrastructure by small special forces squads. A big invasion with entire infantry divisions, artillery support, etc. is extremely rare.
