No, Apple don't care about videogames.
Metal is the computational language and VR/AR language for next gen hardware.

Videogames or game developers outside mobile don't matter.

Nobody gives a frick. That's not where profits are to be made, either in vidyagaems or GPU computation.

why would making it open source encourage adoption anyway? anyone can access it.

If it was open-source, it could be ported to more operating systems and platforms, making it more useful.

        >ported to more operating systems and platforms
apple's whole shtick is locking everything down to their little ecosystem

        >If it was open-source,
you keep saying this. what do you expect Applel to opensource? their shader compiler? or what? do you expect applel to add Metal to Mesa? pretty sure you can get some shim tool to convert any metal shitware to SPIR-V anyhow.

Why would anyone here know about metal unless they were an itoddler? I assumed everyone here was using Linux or a windows power user. If you knew anything about computing why would you use Apple?

The Game Porting Toolkit is not a rendering API.

I don't think apple is even considering open sourcing its VR operating system. Their entire business model is about presenting a "luxurious" and well manicured product. Open sourcing the project so that Joe Hackmatic can run it on his 2008 laptop strapped to his face would ruin their products image as a status symbol. They are going to have dedicated first party teams working to port it only to headsets that support their brand image.

No. Apple will never open their ecosystem unless they're forced by governments like EU and shit

They've already killed OpenGL on Apple, no need to encourage adoption of the only API left

Realistically devs can just use moltenvk

i know we all joke "ill make the logo" whenever a new project gets suggested, but fricking hell, the apple metal logo is proof that you can infact frick it up

every major consumer manufacturer has their own shit
    ms has directx
    apple metal
playstation and nintendo each have one too
nintendo supports vulkan on the switch but this is unusual

      >ms has directx
which is a mistake too. Thankfully tech debt and zoomer incompetence in M$ is destroying it. Only thing that will save it is if the Clang team fixes up M$'s shitty HLSL garbage on top of modern clang and make a better DXIL output with a modern LLVM.

last time I've checked DX12 was the industry leading API dictating what competition should adopt to stay relevant

ya, the best at having the most godawful toolchain maybe. I can't fathom how you cucks put up with that shit.

I think it's a good sign that it's such an unstyled symbol. from my experience when the low hanging fruits are very styled doesn't speak for a good project.

    This shit is literally useless
No sane dev will develop games on a proprietary framework just to target a relatively small portion of underpowered computers
They should have just adopted vulkan and made it more accessible for developers to port their games that way

      >They should have just adopted vulkan and made it more accessible for developers to port their games that way
the claim is, they're in litigation with Khronos Group so they can't let them win by using their specs. I don't even understand why they are seething so much.

    open source? in what way?
Vulkan won and everyone should target SPIR-V. Applel seething about Khronos and claiming they're in open litigation against them is not a valid argument for using Metal and if I ever had to give a frick about gayOS's shitty graphics stack, I'll use a tool to convert my shit to Metal for their shitty UMD.

    isn't Swift open-source too?
problem with Metal or Swift is that they're too tied to Apple
and Apple pretends to live in a world where only Apple exists

    it just doesn't add up

Yeah, but they did not bother to invest resources into porting their language.
