Do you think Conan the Barbarian is an inherently atheistic character?

for all intensive porpoises, he's basically agnostic in nature. like the greco-romans, the cimmerian people seemed to have a very cynical view of gods & often viewed them as untrustworthy unreliable sadistic buttholes. conan may pay lip service to krom from time to time, but actions speak louder than words, & he lives his life in such a way that its apparent he trusts no one, higher powers included, with his destiny but himself

That's not what agnostic means, moron.

Conan doesn't actually believe in Crom

he definitely acknowledges that Crom exists. he believes in him.
he describes him literally as "my god," and prays to him.

pointed out, he merely decides to live independently of Crom, although I would disagree with characterizing Conan as "agnostic."
Conan isn't confused or indifferent to the question of Crom's existence, he acknowledges that he exists. it's just that his relationship with him is based on his own terms; if Crom blesses him, then he's grateful, and if Crom doesn't bless him, then he's spiteful.

Crom doesn't bless anyone though. That's one of his main characteristics. He's cruel and unforgiving

            , Conan says, verbatim
            >…grant me one request. Grant me revenge!
so Conan at least believes Crom has the power to “grant” things, which, if you are going to argue is different from a “blessing” in any meaningful way, then you’re just arguing semantics

He regularly invokes Crom, and in the earlier books he calls on old Irish gods as well. He's had mystical encounters, tried to rape Ymir's daughter, seen supernatural things he can't explain, and been chosen as a champion by Mitra to save a kingdom from an evil sorcerer. He has no reason not to believe in the Gods, even if he doesn't actively worship any of them.

calling God in vein is used precisely because you're not supposed to invoke him willy-nilly, that's not prayer

            Yes.

Is this bait? What the frick is the point of this thread when anyone whose actually read Conan knows that he acknowledges gods on more than one occasion and recognizes that fricking with the wrong ones invites death and misfortune.

Some supernatural entities and powerful magic users, a couple of frost giants, a demon or two..not gods though. Conan fears gods because he knows he can't kill them.

No. It's just that we expect most God's to act like neurotic teenage girls that are only taken seriously or respected because of their power (i.e. YHWH), that's the popular idea of what a God is. So when Crom doesn't act like a vapid sissy or demands his followers to act like vapid sissies it doesn't seem like a religion.

No. He’s based and has a reasonable attitude towards Gods.

He literally believes in Crom, stop making shit up homosexual
        >What gods do you pray to?
        >I pray to the four winds. And you?
        >To Crom… but I seldom pray to him. He doesn’t listen.
        >What good is he, then? It’s just as I’ve always said.
        >He’s strong. If I die I have to go before him, and he will ask me: what is the riddle of steel? If I don’t know it he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me. That’s Crom — strong on his mountain.
        >My god is greater.
        >Crom laughs at your four winds, laughs from his mountain!
wow really seems like Conan doesn’t believe Crom exists, right?

Almost nothing in the movie is canon. Its a fun movie, but its not really Conan. Either way, they at least got it right that Conan knows gods exist but doesn't dedicate his time to any of them.
