Do you think it's better to be extremely good at a single thing or be mediocre at multiple things?

I am a mediocre guy who makes a lot of money, yet I am unsatisfied. I want to be the best at anything, chess, sport, science field, doesn't matter what. Even if I lose my money. I am not sure if this just "grass is greener" issue or whether being at top of the hierarchy is what human brain craves. What do you think?

Who knows. Is it better to be the best ping-pong player in the world, or to be somewhat above-average in looks, fitness, intelligence, money, etc.? My guess is the latter. Though of course if you’re not a dork AND you’re the best ping-pong player, then that’s pretty cool. Magnus Carlsen is a much cooler champion than anyone else could be at the high levels. His championship status simply amplifies his other qualities. Whereas if some other chess nerd were #1, their status would not be magnified (heh) as much. So you need to work on everything but also have at least one thing that makes you stand out. Something exciting, unique, etc.

Being exceptional at one thing without being above-average at almost everything related to it is a myth. Be it athletes or intellectuals, all of these who reach the top are generally competent and just happened to specialize in one particular area.

You should already know if you are exceptional. You learned that in school.

      >better
I don't know because we could define at least a million different norms to base an order relationship i.e. map R^1,000,000 to R

If you are talking about your own survival it is better to be a generalist. If you are talking about selling your services in a market economy it is better to be a specialist. This is because there will always be people that are willing to pay for the best. They are even willing to pay above market prices for a service that is considered the best.

The danger is your high skill becoming obsolete or commoditized. So always keep on the lookout for changing market conditions and adjust accordingly.

I meant whether my desire to be at the very top while sacrificing everything else is normal(biologically) or am I just a egotist moron?

        >I meant whether my desire to be at the very top while sacrificing everything else is normal(biologically)

Across a large enough cross section of the population it is perfectly normal for a certain percentage to feel as you do. It is not normal for EVERYONE to feel as you do. Or for no one to feel as you do.

Also everything has a price so if it's worthwhile it's going to cost something. Be wary of things that cost nothing but offer great rewards. Back in my day we .called those "scams"

Contributing to humanities overall quality of life is a worthy contribution. Somebody that invents a cure for a disease or builds a farm to feed a village is a worthy contribution. But yeah raising a family of four kids is probably at the top of the list. Dying a NEET kissless Virgin scraping by on crypto spreads is probably near the bottom. Nat as bad as a mass murderer, tyrant or entitled troony but still kind of middle bottom tier of worthy contributions to humanity.

Be extremely good at multiple things at the same time enough so that it makes midwits seethe in skepticism, denial and absolute hatred.

Not really possible to do at the same time...to actually be top of market skill to get top market paid that is. Two guys of equal potential, the guy focusing his efforts on drilling down into the extreme levels of expertise is always going to do better than the multitasker.

Now sure, it's possible to be 'competent' in multiple areas. But that's not what we are talking about about here.

Musk is far from any alpha lol. He's more of a sperg than some of the autists here.

Guy literally was used like a beta homosexual by Amber Heard, simped to her and send her money while she was out fricking someone else.

All that money and fame and he has worse game with women than a fricking virgin high schooler. Exposed pussy shitter.

he launches sattelites in space, for the military, with his own rocket company, has his own fricking satellite constellation, has a car company, his own social media company, brain chip company and I surely missed others.
do you think, in today's world, you can get there by being a fricking pussy? are you moronic?
don't mistake his autistic demeanor with his mental activity. he can do some shit. how many of you have the industrial military complex on speed dial?

He can do it because he's wired for conflict. Most people try to avoid conflict in their actual lives. He seems it out and will start shit if there's nothing going on.

It all stems from a fear of the unknown. Kind of like a "devil you know" type deal. If there is no conflict in his life then he starts to panic. Because he doesn't know what's coming around the corner.

          Anonymous

There's some quote out there from him or his friend that said that he doesn't let fear compromise his decision, instead uses it as a guiding star or some shit to navigate the conflict even more rigorously

            Anonymous

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how one man can juggle all that shit without going crazy. Plus start random Twitter wars on the side. It's because he thrived on conflict. It's the family drama queen busybody that always has eight circled of drama going on at any given time. Its because they are wired that way and are lost without the drama.

All that shit and he fails at basic human things. Having the fricking balls to command woman.

He's basically a God status wise, yet acts like a beta fricking pussy. Turns out you can't buy or learn the true strength of the character.

Guy is genuinely morones. He snubbed his first wife while giving away a lot of money(twice) to his second wife. The first wife bore him 5 kids, while taking care of everything for him. The second only leeched off him(twice). All she did was please his ego and he happily gave away his net worth.
