Do you think that game graphics and other computer graphics have maxed out perceptual quality?

Do you think that game graphics and other computer graphics have maxed out perceptual quality? To me, everything from Crysis 2 on looks so good that I don't really see much of a difference, it's all great.

Ironic that you're posting Cloud Strife. He went from being a pastiche of 90s shonen anime tropes with an instantly recognizable design, to just another pretty boy homosexual. Keep in mind his current incarnation bears no resemblance, neither in appearance nor personality, to Miyamoto Musashi, the ancient samurai he was based off of.

Riddle me this: Why is a character whose features are so distinctly angular and sharp to the point of every polygon being lit separately, now rendered with soft, boyish features and fluffy, poofy hair? It's not like the technology couldn't have made Cloud look more detailed back then, this was a deliberate decision.

Another irony is that the image you posted of Cloud is curated. In-game especially at performance settings, he looks ugly. FF7R is the ugliest Square Enix game ever made, partially to blame for its lack of success. One can only conclude the new guard fails to understand that fidelity cannot compete with soul, as eyerolling as the phrase may be.

yes, there are women out there that like attractive men.
          "Do women like x?"
The answer is always "it depends on the woman"

            >attractive men
I don't think that femininity is usually considered attractive...

Come on man, don't be a redditor with these non-answers. We can always talk about trends.

I think certain advances have set things back visually. Full day/night cycles and more dynamic lighting means that some of the old visual tricks that made games look amazing can't be used, so now we're spending a whole lot of GPU effort to simulate material properties to try to get things to look right under any circumstance, and it ends up looking a bit mid. This gives the impression that graphics are stagnating, but I think they really are moving forward. Cyberpunk is a more visually stunning game than any of the Cryses

    Wrong board
No. Check your eyes, the soldier models look awful on Ultra. Also remember that lighting has a pretty good impact on how things look. Global day/night cycles and dynamic lighting have a pretty big impact on what the artstyle team can do to make things look ""better"".

Why do you want global day/night?

Pretty much every open world has global day/night now. Even something like Hunt Showdown has the same level but in either night or day or whatever inbetween.

If the end goal of videogames is essentially virtual reality/holodeck, then visuals alone are nowhere close.
if you want actual videogames, we've long since passed the point at which visual fidelity adds anything to the experience.

Yeah we've hit the wall for now so to speak, the next hurdle is VR, which I assume will eventually be good enough to use. Even higher resolutions and framerates are a meme, there's no serious reason you need over 1080 and 60.

      >VR, which I assume will eventually be good enough to use
it already is, it's just expensive. not because the equipment is expensive, because setting aside the extra space to move around is expensive and inconvenient

I think PS4 quality is good enough. What I'm upset about is that physics in gameplay are still as bad as they were in the late 00's. Nobody makes anything like Red Faction and modern game designers avoid concave rigid bodies like the plague. GPUs are much better, but try to lift a tire and put it on a fire hydrant in a modern game and you'll see it rest on top of like if it were in a glass cube. Games don't use ragdolls well either, I think of games like Minority Report (that came out over 20 years ago,) and wonder why there aren't more ragdoll sandbox games. Destruction physics is the worst of all I think, you can look up videos of older games where you break something and smaller breakable pieces are spawned, they seems to be absent from modern games. I used to make statue props for Garry's Mod, I used fracture voronoi to make all the pieces.

i agree it's weird how games have become more rigid over time
i understand that that making everything destructible could just cause people to cheat/shortcut everything, but there's got to be some kind of middle ground
red faction is so much fun just smashing everything, i don't think i ever actually finished guerilla because i spent most of the time just playing with destroying everything

fun fact: you can use a mouse+keyboard on the ps2 version of red faction II
