What was his problem?

What was his problem?
major clinical depression that was resistant to electroshock therapy
>What was his problem?
extremely high neuroticism
You're just jealous he's a better writer than you and fricked more b***hes than you'll ever even make eye contact with.
He stalked a rather plain looking woman for ages, and she called him abusive for it. Hardly the Lothario you describe.
sounds cool but im still never going to read a single page of this bandana-wearing megahomosexual
Wouldn't it be nice to speak sincerely
And not always act so fricking smug?
And wouldn't it be nice to feel some balance
Without the aid from any drug?
If every mother father son and daughter
Could just close their eyes and feel the water!
>everything he writes is steeped in postmodern irony
It really isn't. What is it like understanding the world through memes?
Irony is the song of a bird that has come to love its cage. Hate the cage. Shit all over the cage. Fall dead from salmonella in your own shit to show the cage what's what.
frick this guy man. he gives famous commencement speeches and writes an entire fricking novel about dealing the monotony of life, about being genuine and not getting overcome by the banality of existence and then he kills himself. all optimists are liars and I can always see through them.
He may have lost, but he fought. Dammit, he fought.
He rightly diagnosed his (and by extension many people in our civilization's) problem and the solution but was too burnt out from decades of drug abuse and the guilt of excessive fornication to execute it
he used irony in a very intentional way that was sort of critical of itself.
that's how i'd describe it.
He used it as it is in life.
i talk sincerely all the time and it improves nothing
he has hipster mentality: he's knowledgeable on some arts and culture but can't do some raw creativity and always needs a reference
That headscarf looks so dump. Like he just had brain surgery.
he writes is steeped in postmodern irony
produces anything sincere in his life
you've never even read anything he wrote
I can't get past the stupid bandana. It's so cringe
He wore it because he was embarrassed by his sweaty forehead. Still pathetic, but at least in his neurotic mind it served a purpose beyond looking like a c**t.
See, men lie
What do you think he would make of current times if he didn't off himself?
the world has changed a lot since 2008
He wasn't writing about 2008. TPK is pretty much written for zoomers, a generation of Sylvanshine's inundated with information with no idea of the relevance of any of it.
I meant current current times
Let me guess you read Oblivion
Read something by him other than Oblivion
i'd like to know what you found insincere about those stories.
The insincere thing i see is mostly in the novels, and only in the meta-crux that they each rely on for their initial draw and over-all impact.
But Good Old Neon is the only truly sincere thing he ever wrote
the only one you ever read*
all of the stories in oblivion are incredibly "sincere" (aside from maybe Philosophy and the mirror of Nature and The Suffering Channel), and I'd really love to hear an argument as to why anyone might find theyre not.
The irony of Wallace is primarily that he used it to show its faults which you kind of have to do or it ends up being "just trust me bro, irony bad." This created an unintended and tragic irony, those who are steeped in irony can only see the irony, it is their standard form of communication and they absorb it effortlessly at cost of the context.
he'd be like Sam Hyde today; sellout streamer cheaply daily commentating his hatred of what he slowly became, likely hating his own fans
I don't get why people pretend he's all about sincerity and sticking it to irony or something. At best he uses irony as a tool to recursion back to what it's projecting, which is raw emotion, but even the funny post-modern bits in his novels (which peak with Everything and More) are such a tiny part of his overall ouvre I'm forced to consider the people who pretend to read him are in themselves just seeped in what they decry and that's the only thing they get from his books.
