Dune

I want to read Dune before I see Dune 2 (already saw Dune 1), but I hear it's a bit of a slog to get through and dry. Is this true?

For zoomer attention spans, yes. For people whose brains haven't been fried by social media, no.

I had the same idea, what page should I start on if I want to skip the part covered by the first film?

      Unironically

. The first movie is basically a concept art showcase, in no way does it meaningfully adapt the first part of the book. Much more action in the second half, so thankfully the second movie is much better.

It's YA genre fiction. Read it in an afternoon and talk about it at your kiddy table:

I’m 22 and haven’t willingly finished a book in my life. I tried to read two books since high school and got bored early on. I heard how good Dune 2 was when it came out and picked it up that day. I finished it in two weeks. It can be slow but it’s phenomenal. I love it. I actually didn’t like the first movie, which I watched when I got to the halfway point in the book. But the second movie is phenomenal. Truly incredible, despite the changes from the book. It’s a simplified version of the story (it had to be, it’s such a dense book) but you get to watch this beautiful movie with that more complex story in your head filling in the gaps. I just picked up the second book. I’m going to keep reading as a habit. Get the book tomorrow and finish it before the movie leaves theaters. You’re late in the game and it probably only has a couple of weeks left so get on it. You’ll be happy you did.

For anyone intimidated by Dune, don't be. Anything you need to understand the book gives you, if it doesn't tell you, you don't need it.

Honestly the first 300 pages feel like 100, they really breeze by once the story gets going.

It's written in simple prose and is very readable. No excuses.

It's really worth it. The films are paced like action movies and you lose out on a lot, especially Paul's growth as he learns to live with the fremen. You'll be robbing yourself of a special experience by watching the films before reading it.

I read dune in a couple days, I didn't find it dry at all.

It's a short book and needed like 300 more pages to fully develop its world.

dune is an acquired taste, like beer or coffee, i've read like 4 chapters of it in my first two times of trying to getting into it, on the third time I finished the entire book in like 2 days and then consoomed everything else in the following weeks

it's not, if you think it's slow I wonder what you read normally.

Basically the book introduces lots of names and places in context without immediately explaining what they are
When you see a new name pop up that hasn’t been explained, just sock it away and know that it’ll be paid off within 20 pages or so
The people that hate Dune basically want everything to be immediately explained and are butthurt when the book expects you to pay attention

What you should do is when you come across a new made up word, go to the appendix. There's a dictionary for all those words.

I didn’t look at the glossary once and had no problems following the book

          Attention span is destroyed.
          And reading comprehension doesn't exist.
It's really painful to live as a non-idiot in this world.

Literally every new made up word is accompanied by a paragraph of exposition explaining the function, use, and socioeconomic implications of that thing or concept

It is pleasure to read it slowly. And spoilers can't ruin the experience.
I started Dune just before Christmas. Currently in the middle of God Emperor of Dune. Reading in my native language, not English.

The first 30-60 pages can be slow, and yes, I'd even say a "slog," but after that things get interesting.
The banquet scene in particular is phenomenal.
Just grit your teeth and push through it.

recently my friend and i read through the dune series and now he cannot stop speaking chakobsa. he insists he is a fremen native and does the sand walk in public like an idiot. he refuses to leave home without his fremkit (backpack) and stillsuit (heavy duty raincoat). it is summer so due to this he is sweating profusely and he complains about wasting his water on the living. he uses his thumper (iphone x) to call shai hulud (an uber) and speaks to the usually ethnic driver as if they too are fremen natives. i have had to stop him from walking out into traffic recently as well. he insists that he is the kwisatz haderach and has seen the way across. we went to an asian restaurant and he threatened to stab me with his gom jabbar (chopsticks). at this point, i am getting sick of it all. please give me another book for him to obsess over so we can leave this dune phase behind.

I both the trilogy in a single book and never read it because of this. Big ass bibles are incredibly unfun to read.
I wish I'd gone for separate books instead.
