Everyone told me that anything past the OG Dune www dog shot, but I am this far into the saga and absolutely loving it, voraciously reading it like no other book I can remember reading.

Am I moronic or gay? This is my first time reading literary sci if as well. Thoughts on the dune saga/universe?

Finished God Emp a couple of weeks ago. Shit is fricking kino. Anyone who says its shit got filtered hard and can't understand it.

God emp is the best of the series save perhaps children of dune, Dune Messiah was pretty weird and didn't really go anywhere
but it does have some weird dialogue when the author gives what he thought about homosexuality

The series takes a nosedive after God Emperor, but the last two books are still enjoyable, with the last one providing you lots of information on the Bene Gesserit.

I just finished the first book yesterday and fricking loved it, ordered Messiah, Children of Dune and god emperor, can't wait to read them. In the meantime I am gonna watch the 1984 movie alternate edition on youtube.

Pic related sums up IQfy's general attitude on the series, not sure who you were talking to to get "everyone" telling you the rest of the series is shit. God Emperor is typically held up as a competitor against the original Dune as Herbert's magnum opus.
Haven't read Heretics or Chapterhouse myself, but it sounds like they're still pretty good but ultimately go nowhere due to Herbert's death, and the conclusion to the story written by his son and that other homosexual are big disappointments.

Ok, so you loved the original Dune and you want more? Ask yourself did you love its setting or its plot? If you loved the sandy planet, follow this guide like I have. Just to let you know, the following books are nothing like the first one. Some of them are arguably deeper, but they are not nearly as charming.
Now, if you loved the plots within plots within plots, I highly suggest you jump the boat and switch to pic related. The Godfather might not be what you'd expect coming off Dune, but trust me that it feels the same. It's a book about family feuds, backstabbing and what it means to be a man.

        >The Godfather
        interesting recommendation
i kinda was left wanting more dune-like books so i read the entire game of throness books but i'm still craving, i'll check it out, thanks anon

I've seen this image so many times and even posted it myself but only just see this book in pic. Wtf is it? I can't seem to find it anywhere when i google for it and no one mentions that it exists except for this image. Was the creator just meme-ing?

        Anonymous

I imagine it and the ones near it toward the end are fake, which is sad; if the image creator wasn't so attached to the format of the majority of BH/KJA covers they would have been able to represent other gems by the duo

It was probably in the works, but cancelled or something.

I liked the last two, but by the time I'd finished God Emperor, I'd already switched fully from caring about plot development to trying to piece together Herbert's political ideology so it was easy to ignore the weirder things like Futars, chairdogs, and all the child ghola molestation

was the golden path just a means of rapid and infinite expansionism to the point where no one could ever rule everything?

        Anonymous

Not so much just that no one could rule everything, but also to ensure that humanity was so thoroughly spread throughout the universe that no single cataclysm could really threaten the species as well as to force adaptation to prevent dependency on traditional spice
As far as Herbert was concerned, any kind of centralization was anathema to the human spirit and the God Emperor was a neccessary evil to engineer humanity towards being self reliant (both sociologically and genetically)

        Anonymous

Kinda, it was also to negate prescience, so that it could neither be used to control or destroy mankind. Apparently without the golden path the Ixians wind up creating self-improving prescient hunter-killer robots which track and exterminate mankind. And even without the robots, another Kwisatz Haderach could show up and grab humanity by the collective ballsack. Due to the golden path Siona's descendants are invisible to those with the ability to predict the future, in the same way guild navigators or potential Kwisatz Haderach were but without having the ability to predict the future themselves. Leto's presence also leads to the creation of ships and rooms that are shielded from prescience, together with the the breaking of the spice monopoly and the breaking of the guild monopoly on space travel.

So humanity is widely scattered, and it's no longer possible for any single force or group to control mankind, because there's no single point of dependency that can be taken over.

It also avoids a problem that Leto rants about during God Emperor, that a ruler who is successful will cause other to try to replicate that success.

        > "You don't anger me. Sometimes you irritate me, that is the extent of it. You cannot imagine what I have seen-caliphs and mjeeds, rakahs, rajas and bashars, kings and emperors, primitos and presidents-I've seen them all. Feudal chieftains, every one. Every one a little pharaoh."

        >"Forgive my presumption, Lord."

        >"Damn the Romans!" Leto cried.

        >He spoke it inwardly to his ancestors: "Damn the Romans!"

        >Their laughter drove him from the inward arena.

        >"I don't understand, Lord," Moneo ventured.

        >"That's true. You don't understand. The Romans broadcast the pharaonic disease like grain farmers scattering the seeds of next season's harvest -Caesars, kaisers, tsars, imperators, caseris... palatos... damned pharaohs."

can't believe i let myself be gaslithed by IQfy into reading God emperor. I didn't like it at all and basically what said is the smart thing to do. The only fun thing about reading it was seeing what kind of wild shit Frank was gonna say on the next page.

What are some books that have the same sort of story weaving with worldbuilding? Tolkien does it well but I've read all of them.

I liked reading about how Arrakis had changed, how the Fremen had changed, how pathetic the museum Fremen were.
