Any cool publishers that do hardcovers? Trying to make one myself lately. Really simple and straightforward designs. Inspired by Tschichold preferably (Penguin). Looking for some more references.
Fpbp. This is actually what I have in mind. Which ones do you own?
Could you please elaborate, good sir?
Zone anon here, currently on my shelf I have Your Money Or Your Life by Le Goff, Culture of the Copy by Schwartz, two volumes of The Accursed Share and Theory of Religion by Bataille. Pic related is the next one I want
NYRB sisters
I,I don't feel so well. Not like this.
Don't worry, there's enough room on your shelf for both
>Could you please elaborate, good sir?
I'm not sure how much you'd like. I think most publishers cut corners and put out lower quality bindings, so I do my own. I found out about the "library" standard, which is supposed to be very durable so that it can withstand "rigors of library use."
My thinking behind this is that my books will outlive me for a very, very long time, plus repair is rather easy, so it can allow the book to be usable for a significantly larger amount of time.
I should probably note that I'm an archivist. I have about 20TB of data dedicated to the preservation of various things, as well as backups of this. I've got physical books archived as well. It's really just a hobby, but I likely come off as extremely serious about it.
If I'm being honest, I prefer my own builds (I do a very strict ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39.78-2000, EXCEPT that I mix my own paste instead of PVA [which I do keep on hand just in case.])

The published Drieu's Fire Within, I hope that means they're working on a translation of Gilles.
The poor man's NYRB already has you
https://tikhanovlibrary.substack.com/p/gilles-table-of-contents
You have literally admitted to using DeepL for your translations. No idea why anyone would read your catalog. Also, take out an ad
Cool, thanks
Is this true?
That work of his is socially acceptable due to the film. Otherwise his other works are verboten.
Man, I wish I could read dense books in my second language (French) I just feel like an idiot needing to look up so many words per page, which does become fatiguing.
They're totally different catalogs, why would NYRB bros be scared?

>Humorless NYRB shill linking to his own posts like it proves something

Wow, that's just sad.
>Uses Lulu too
Yeah, removed the bookmark already. Shame. I was excited for Gilles.
Good pick. I actually went to their office once and they let me choose anything I wanted from their catalog for 50% off. Granted, that was over 10 years ago now.
No. And his other work has been translated, although its an incomplete catalog.
https://russiancosmist.substack.com/
Has translated several of his journalistic writings, and The Man on Horseback is a very interesting novel of his that was recently released.
A lot of cool stuff on here, just wish it wasn't behind a log-in or paywall, but I understand if these are actual translations why one would want to do that.
I do have a translation of The Man on Horseback from some Arktos-like publisher. The translation is okay, but based on my limited French it seems lacking.
After reading half a dozen "translations" by Alexander Jacob I know now to avoid him. He butchers so many translations it has turned me off any sort of no-name translator
That guy similarly uses DeepL to translate
I'm convinced a lot of his work is honestly from Google Translate. His grasp of English is questionable, too. Arktos really published his junk and said it was acceptable. It's a shame as so many of the pieces he's worked on ache for a good translation.
>all those NDSAP works
>Leon Degrelle speeches
>it has turned me off any sort of no-name translator
For me it's Adelphi. Beautiful, simple designs, great paper quality.

Where's Blue Lard on that shelf?

>filters mid wits
nyrb is peak midwit
peak midwit is calling people midwit on IQfy, nyrb comes second at most
isn t all owned by penguin israelites anyways?
Yes.
everyman's for most, folio for decorative, NYRB for others
I wish there were more publishers who printed ancient classics in their original languages with no introduction, no margain notes, no translation.
Just the text as it was when it was originally written. As the author intended
i guess the problem is that there are a lot of manuscripts and scholarly debate about which is better
i wish there were companies to which you can send a manuscript and they will print it out and leather bind it for you but to be both of quality(like everyman s) and not crazy expensive(under 50 dollars for 1000 pages)
it would sell about 10 copies. Making books is actually quite expensive and only profitable by selling thousands and thousands.
>Just the text as it was when it was originally written. As the author intended
moron. There's multiple versions of ancient texts. Some only differ slightly.
Shut up
IQfy has always been a Wordsworth board. Always will be. Our hearts belong to Wordsworth.
Valencourt Books has brought many pulp releases (like Paperbacks from Hell line) out for another chance.
I don't have one yet, but for my birthday recently, I recieved Philip K. Dick's Library of America collection, and I'll definitely be looking into them for other authors down the road.
They are quite nice and a great way to get a big collection for not much money if you buy used. I also have some Chandler and anthologies of detective fiction that are excellent.
Ok, I took the bait.
Is that you, Harmony?
You really think he would use IQfy?
Ya
Unironically Wordsworth.
I'm polish, they are basically the only way I can get English classics for cheap.
Paid a dollar for moby dick, best book I've ever read.
Dalkey Archive.
NYRB shills hard at work ITT shitcoating anybody who isn't a corporate ghoul.
While I love NYRB the reason for that is that they've carved out a good niche for themselves.
Their translations are also much better than the crap that this Tikhanov library guy is shilling
Their translations are reprints of existing works.
By far, the (French) Pléiade.
The only drawback to them is that whenever I read from anything else, even if it's objectively decently made (Library of America, Everyman's Library), I just feel like I'm reading from a poorly made book.
France is another level. I've got some Nobel Comittee editions and they're absolutely beautiful. Same quality as Limited Editions Club books, but cheaper than Folio Society.
