It's good that you're learning this early. Understand that if your own family treating you this way then you'd be a fool to expect better treatment from employers/strangers.

Consider changing majors to something medical.

      Anonymous

This is why I'm trying to get into research. My father tells me to become an engineer, but nobody takes engineers seriously anymore.

      Is medical really that different?

just casually mention what salaries Google Interns get.

That's just tacky and won't impress anyone the way music does except Dutch people.

Think about it, what gender are most nurses? Do you think of nurses as incredibly intelligent and hard working people at the cutting edge of their craft? Do you remember COVID? Do you remember how we shut down the entire planet and killed our economies because the medical professionals told us to?

No. Nurses are women, usually around 105-110 IQ. They've got unions and can clear six figures, even in Low COL areas. On top of that they wield immense social/cultural power and respect. Yeah, there's some conspiracy theories and haters, but that's a small price to pay for the undying trust you get from the bulk of the population. Hell of a lot better than being universally ridiculed.

        https://www.ouhealth.com/careers/nursing-careers/registered-nurses/

Here's an example from Oklahoma City. Level 2 RN (1 year experience) pays $48/hr. OKC is low COL. Beyond that, there are hospitals and medical facilities in just about every city in the country. You can find work anywhere. If you're doing computer shit you're gonna have to move to where the computer jobs are.

people who shit on nurses are absolutely moronic. they can make so much money, especially if they're traveling. I'm aware that covid was an unprecedented event, but some travel nurses were making 5k a week https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna59604&ved=2ahUKEwjk153VrOyEAxVvLdAFHcFJCZgQFnoECCAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw11c-_Bv2R9pcAkmNBQHE9Y when we were in lockdown. the hours can be very good if you don't want to do the traveling gig and end up with lots of time off. working very hard for peanuts makes you a sucker, not noble.

            Anonymous

Notice the tone of the headline. It's playing the nurses out to be the victims who had their pay "slashed in half". Going from 5k/week to 2.5k is being framed as an injustice to otherwise heroic people.

That's the kind of cultural and social power the role has. You can be making 6 figures and people will feel sorry for you.

To be fair, you ARE a bandwagoner, and chose a soulless degree for the money (), rather than any passion or interests. Many can see through that really easily, just as they know the majority of people studying medicine aren't doing it because they're passionate about helping people (they'd be doing paramedics instead)

It's offputting to a lot of people, because you know the music student values self expression and the beauty of music so much they want to spend their life studying it, meanwhile you chose CS because someone told you to and it makes good money (not anymore lol)

There was a blackpill video recently where they looked at wages/salaries of normgroids and fricking menial labourers were earning as much as doctors and engineers. Yes we all know the caveats that come with that, but some bogan miner doesn't say "oh yeah but that's 80 hours a week in hellish conditions and my body will be ratshit by 40". Your sense of dignity felt threatened by family members not giving you the respect and admiration you felt was due to you by virtue of the perceived difficulty and value of your field. You are learning the hard lesson that all dorks eventually learn. That your value to the tribe really isn't tied to whatever stupid task or occupation you assign yourself. It's all about personality, how you carry yourself, and your relative social standing within whatever "group" you find yourself in. Also there is a psychological phenomenon called "do gooder degradation", basically if someone in the tribe is more valuable than you it's in your best interest to de-emphasize them to bring them down to your level so they can't get a upper hand on you socially.

It's interesting work, I like that it's split between between office (CAD, design, simulation) and actual hands-on labwork.
Also the fact that it's an actual system DESIGN position where I get to apply what I learned, not just some maintenance crap.
          >Is it at least a remote position?
          In Engineering? lmao.

Normies' brain cannot understand STEM, even normies studying STEM, if you talk to them about math/science you notice their understanding is shallow and they never truly understand the theories.

The lives of the working class revolve around simping for pussy.

To a beta male (95% of men), having a good job is key to this, but not TOO good that it makes you a social pariah.

If yo wanted praise you should have thought about skills that would be useful to the family and followed through. Everybody loves a doctor, hell even the a lawyer comes in handy. Computer engineer? What can you do for the average man? Build a somewhat useful program in 10 months that saves them seconds of time?

I feel u anon since we are both in the same situation. It's the bane of our profession but take pride in it. Don't be angry at them for they don't know any better.
Like you said: It's either too complicated and cannot be explained in an interesting way to someone that does not have a basic understanding of the topic. And therefore/Or to boring.
I can't explain semiconducters, LCC resonant converters, the asymmetrical half-bridge with inductive outputfilter in a simple way to someone non electrical engineering.

Because what we do falls under the radar, subtly improving their lives. Central assets to life like refrigerators, washing maschines, mobile phones, television, GPS, cars, internet, computers, air conditioners, flow heaters, etc. I could go on and on. Point is, all of that exists thanks to engineers and scientists.
The athlete that studies music? Who designs and builds his microphone, his instrument recorder, his amplifier, his high-end speakers? Who coded his recording program, his interface, the data formats like .mp3?
Who do they look at when green energy, more effiency, better computer architectures, higher power density, faster computing is demanded?
They simply expect it to happen. All the luxurys of modern life just spawned into existence as far as they are concerned.
So don't shame yourself into feeling less than you are. Let them make their jokes.

CS is the meme degree of STEM sozzos mcpozzos

i think it was Marvin Minsky who said something along the lines of "computer science is as much the study of how computers work, as much as astronomy is the study of how telescopes work". ie it is indeed v important for astronomers to know about telescopes, and even invent new and better telescopes, but they are still just tools for le telescope user to figure new and beautiful things about the universe that no one ever knew before

Computer engineering is not one of the cool STEM degrees. When people talk about high status STEM degrees they mean the hard sciences like physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, geology, and all of their daughter fields. I got my undergrad in physics and astronomy, and my masters in oceanography. I did my thesis on microplastics in coral reefs and I get to travel around on research ships going to cool ass places.
