I never understood why it’s the gpu manufacturer’s responsibility to fix issues in individual games. Isn’t the whole point of using a standard graphics API like vulkan or direct3d to make everything work exactly the same across different gpus? Or is the problem that nvidia’s implementation of the api itself is broken?
Shader compilation is the driver's job
Usually the GPU driver does a hack to make performance better or fix a certain bug in programs. If you rename browsers like Vivaldi or Brave back to Chrome.exe you will notice that GPU benchmarks in your browser and games like RuneScape run better fps wise because your driver is now applying those chromium fixes.
>Or is the problem that nvidia’s implementation of the api itself is broken?
That, and because Nvidia has 70% of the Windows GPU market many developers treat their implementation of direct3D, OpenGL, or Vulkan as their target, instead of the actual API documentation.
Vendor specific code -> hacks to try to work on other vendors (who actually faithfully implemented the standard)
Always produces bad results.
Coding to the standard -> vendor specific hacks (just when needed)
Is the much better way to go.
This is one of the reasons for Valve adopting DXVK and Zink. If they can get enough of a user base onto a standard reference implementation, then developers will need to consider that. Then all the vendors can do is implement support for that.
Also why Apple started only allowing Metal so they have absolute control over their whole platform with no hardware vendor able to make themselves indispensable.
Don't be surprised when the next-generation of graphics APIs are high-level APIs built on low-level cross-platform APIs or vendor APIs where needed.
Windows:
Intel, Nvidia, AMD
Linux:
AMD, Intel, Nvidia
>Intel best
>Relies on wrappers for old Direct3D
Lol
Best in terms of reliability, not so much performance or whatever.
Intel justwerks on Windows, Nvidia justwerks (most of the time) on Windows, AMD often shits the bed on Windows.
Reliability of what element? How do you tell the difference between a GPU crash if it was the driver or PSU failing to deliver the wattage for the load and errored like CPU tuning? WHEA hardly is accurate.
Just recently Nvidia GPUs like the 4090 and 4080 and 4070 were throwing out of video memory driver crash errors because of INTEL CPUs
all 3 are godlike on both OS' compared to just 10 years ago
I use an intel arc a380 or something for transcoding on my plex server and it works well. I wouldn't game on it though
Nvidia have been great on both for the past 15 years. Can't comment on the lesser brands.
AMD runs games over Proton better than the same games natively.
Seriously, AMD is the best excuse for leaving Windows.
Proton has a small compatibility list. On windows you can ply 250 thousand different games. On Linux you have to navigate an everchanging small range of mostly compatible to compatible games
Not really, the "official" list is just what Valve has been personally assed to test. You can enable proton for all Windows games, and I've only had one that didn't work out of my library of 200-300+ gaymes.
Never go by compatibility lists. Lots of games on Steam say they're not compatible on Steam Deck but they actually are. FFXIV is the biggest example. It's not Deck verified but Gabe Newell has been seen playing it and he says its one his favorite Deck games.

Yeah, and they all have some hack command line args or env variable that needs to be set and even then there is some limitation. Windows for gaming, Linux for everything else. AMD CPU, Nvidia GPU. That's the optimal config.
You are moronic and any reply you make confirms it
This.
If there's no kernel level AC, it works.
Concession accepted.
>Windows wrapper uses hacks that are standard on Windows
Holy shit, call the press!
The increases performance isn't directly caused by Wine/Proton API, but by DXVK giving better performance than some unoptimized implementations of DX9-11
This. It's literally DirectX being a piece of shit. All those graphics glitches on Nvidia in Dragons Dogma 1? Fixed using DXVK. All that shader stutter in Baldurs Gate 3 and Jedi Fallen Order? Fixed with DXVK Async.
nvidia is almost matching amd on linux currently, and will have them matched sometime in may/june when they finally push explicit sync support so wayland doesnt frick up. they also have open source'ish drivers just like amd although you need a new'ish gpu to use them.
Thanks for confirming you're a moron.
I've already accepted your concession. You can stop your asshurt replies to me now.
scizophrenic + cope w/ no argument
>install ProtonGE (and Wine-LutrisGE for non-steam gaymes)
>launch gayme
>gayme
As shrimple as that
>apt install nvidia-drivers
I've done this for 3 generations of cards dating back to 2012 with no issues. But then again, I'm not a gayland troony.
nvidia is fine on linux its really come a long way, amd fanboys refuse to accept this and have a mental breakdown when you mention it because their only justification for amd being better is pretty much no longer the case.
