Goethe kinda sus?

Am I moronic or is this really just the story of a terminal Simp? I keep hearing about Goethe as this great polymathic genius but this was … well not what I expected. Dude really an hero’d over some random thot. I also picked up Faust but now I feel like its just going to be mid ass verse of Goethe trying to be Homer

He was 24 when he wrote it and it took him under two months to crank it out. The genre was a popular fad of the time and he wrote the best example by far. Judging him by this rather than his mature works is beyond moronic.

And Pynch wrote V. when he was 25, Hemingway TSAR at 26. Generally speaking, promising early output is a sign of later greatness. Goethe is no exception, Werther is trash and Faust is imo the most overrated “great work” of pre industrial Europe.

You'll have to elaborate on that, since I think it's absurd to think those novels are better than Faust.

Im not saying they are, both novels though juvenile are very good and indicate future masterworks that are greater than Faust. In the same vein, Werther has some great passages but in terms of narrative its bland and much of the novel is filler.
In V. you could see the framework of what would eventually expand into the monolithic masterpieces later to come, M&D and GR. Hemingway the inverse, his refined style needed only carving and eventually became his genius short stories, Snows and especially The Old Man & The Sea.
Gothe never truly escaped the shortcomings of Werther. Faust has some truly brilliant passages, but much of it is bland and unoriginal. The OP is not totally wrong in presupposing its Homer induced, Goethe loved the Greek/Roman classics and Faust is his attempt at a mystical epic. Unfortunately it came a few thousand years late, in an age when reason prevailed and no man still believed that gods and devils walked the Earth.

Why do redditors always want to rank everything including literature and art? Like, do they really go around all day thinking, “Ok, Pynchon is number 2 this year, and Goethe’s the 7 seed.”

My personal theory is it’s a holdover from there incessant love of Marvel and Star Wars movies where they’re constantly checking box office numbers which they see as a sign of artistic merit somehow. No doubt OP was thrilled when Avenger became number one.

    Any other theories?
