You stopped reading that halfway through, didn't you?

Yes, because reading is merely a surrogate for thinking for yourself; it means letting someone else direct your thoughts.
Why would I want to extend such a process?

And Arthur, in turn, was right about his mom. He told her she (and her sappy novels) would be forgotten in a few years while his works would be studied for centuries. The thing with Schopenhauer is, his arrogant demeanor and unpleasant personality were totally warranted because he actually was a once-in-a-generation genius. Only Goethe recognized this at the time, it takes one to know one.

Yeah, but that's why Goethe was the superior man. He had just as much of an intellectual right to be arrogant and hostile (if not more of a right), but he was instead a pleasant and jovial figure.

Very true, I don't think anyone disagrees on that point, including that Goethe was more of a genius than Schopenhauer was. It's just that, if you're going to be an obnoxious butthole, it helps if you can back it up by actually being a genius too. Schopenhauer constantly complained about the idiocy of his fellow men, well in his case it wasn't just the arrogance of the bookish 14 year old who just discovered the Wikipedia page for logical fallacies. He actually was leagues smarter than 99% of humans he interacted with.

Fair enough. I personally agree that his mother was a raging c**t so, to any extent he had an odious personality, it was probably at least partly her fault.

            >Schopenhauer. A genius
Why are you such a midwit. He didn't even understand hegel ND his philosophy is absolute shite.

How was his philosophy "shite" ? He was right, we're doomed and we will always suffer and want more, you don't know if our future will be good or bad but nowadays it seems like its looking very bad. Maybe his philosophy and the fact we live in a prison planet could be true.

Goethe was also terrifying. He destroyed some guy's painting and made fun of people for dying before he himself did. Less repressed of a genius thoughbeit.

This woman drove her husband to suicide and didn't want to introduce her son to the superstar artist of his time (Goethe) even though she was personal friends with him. And then people repost this image as if she's the good guy. If anything Schopenhauer inherited his shit personality from his prostitute mother

She’s just coping with having a son much more clever than she is. She was also an intellectual. Schopenhauer is an butthole, but she’s the sort of mother that would take any opportunity to bring him down.

This is what makes it funny. He was able to read in Spanish, Italian, French, Latin etc. For a philosopher he was very widely read in literature.

"It is a snare for a man to say rashly, “It is holy!” And after the vows to make inquiry." The flipside being, that it is a snare to casually pronounce as sin that which the Word does not. "Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and turn away from evil." "Where there is no guidance, the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory."
