i credit him with along with ken wheeler (pbuh) to be the most important teachers in my life
i think UG will become more popular over time as people seek refuge from the new (satanic) age gurus. i have a few friends that are getting deep into meditation manuals and wacky new age "science fiction as reality". thinking about gifting them both mind is a myth but it just might end up crushing their spirits

According to UG there's no such thing as Satan or "spirits". The UGian critique of all that new age crap is that it's dumb and a scam not that it's SUPER SCARY AND SATANIC!!!!!

lol, he never says that anywhere. all of his books are skepticism about the validity of the various religions usefulness as a vehicle to “enlightenment”, he is not a naive materialist

            meanwhile UG:
            >There is no such thing as spiritual or psychological enlightenment, because there is no such thing as spirit or psyche at all
            >We use what we call thought to achieve our spiritual or material goals. We may consider the spiritual goals as 'higher'. The culture in which we are functioning places spiritual goals on a higher level than the materialistic goals. But the instrument which we are using is matter, which is thought. Thought to me is matter. Therefore, all our spiritual goals are materialistic in their value.

    UG:
    >Suffering is the foundation on which the whole Christian religion is based. Don't forget that. So you suffer in the hope of getting a permanent seat there in heaven—non-existent heaven. You are going through hell now in the hope of reaching heaven after your death. What for? So suffer. All religions emphasize that. Bear the pain, the endurance of pain is the means. You go through hell in the hope of having paradise at the end of your life, or the end of a series of lives if you want to believe that. I am just pointing out the absurdity of talking about these things. The religious has no meaning when you are pushed into a corner. Then you will behave exactly like anybody else. So this culture, your values, religious or otherwise, haven't touched a bit there.
    >If man is freed from this moral dilemma, which has been the basis of the whole thinking of man, then he will live like a human being. Not a spiritual man, not a religious man. A religious man is no good for the society. A kind man is a menace to the society...
    >I am not condemning only Jesus. All teachers - Buddha, Mohammed -- all the teachers whom we consider to be the great religious teachers of mankind, let alone those people who are doing holy business in the market place today.

the man is literally a fanatic spiritualist who grow up deception from all of it. but you can see the void and sadness in his eyes.
what surprise me about UG is that even if he is brilliant, completely brilliant in a way, still his final vision is not so different from your realist cynical uncle that believe everything is simple and down to earth and every abstract thought is just bullshit.

      >still his final vision is not so different from your realist cynical uncle that believe everything is simple and down to earth and every abstract thought is just bullshit.
That's why he appeals so much to midwits who would prefer to write it all off rather than make a serious intellectual effort.

i dont think he appeal to midwits at all. midwits go for pop science or pop minduflness. ug it really can be harsh and hurtful. i think in a spiritualit sense he really have insights about why spiritualism is bullshit. i mean, you need investing time in real faith in religions or spirituality to grasp what ug is saying. even if i think his ultimate vision of life is just plain realism he is intimately attached to spiritualism so that plain realism shine and feel insightful. outside of it is just ... empty.

Ug a final boss? He is an initial boss, but it is undeniable that his look is peculiar and above all funny. He was a very funny person.

Although UG appears to be an illusionist or reductive materialist, his take on life is richer than theirs. Although he denied everything, he both had a structure and a philosophy. His non-metaphysics is contradictory and as he investigates more into the reality of thought it falls apart. Denial may be the easiest approach to inquiry, but it is the most sterile. Denying phenomenal experience through discourse and language is just a raw contradiction but by saying that you are just a barking dog UG was taking the easy way out, humorous, but meaningless.

UG had a very hard life and when looking into his biography it is easy to see why he came to have such a pessimistic philosophy about everything. He is a fascinating character because of how weird his thought system is despite the fact that he has denied having one. Despite denying everything, he allowed me to stop being a materialist. It is almost an insult to his image to say that he allowed me a transformation, because he flatly denied this and even despised the use of his words to achieve a personal goal. But UG also claimed that he didn't give a shit what we do with his. That's the magic of it.

Since when is feeling the depth of experience the consequence of rejecting materialism? Maybe that's what you feel.
