        The Firm by John Grisham

He uses an antiquated vocabulary, I always thought it was intentional as the words sound both unfamiliar and familiar, not to mention incredibly meaningful in a lot of places, that said there are sometimes it's overdone and a little pretentious.

          Ew, Grisham.

I can't tell. I grew up reading old books so I'm used to it but then again I'm weird. I won't front, I read a lot of big sophisticated books as a means of intellectually flexing because I had an inferiority complex due to a learning disability making reading hard at first which the other kids mocked me for. I wanted to shove it up their ass later by showing them that I can read things far beyond them. In retrospect it was pathetic but the books were still good.

Better to have will towards something than none at all, atleast the process made you introspective, it seems. Autism btw? Cause that was my hand

Yep Autism. Only reason I can read is because a teacher took extra time before school started to try an alternative method of teaching me. Miserable and slow experience but very much worth it. I really owe that woman and should at least write her a letter one day.

It's such a wholesome and momentus thing to actually have a teacher who makes an effort to have a personal impact on students, it's probably impossible to forget them. Only thing I can recall being good at is visuals, so once I got the hang of it I kind enjoyed the potential and utility of literacy

His writing style is the only thing that helped me cope in the hospital after I tried to self immolate. The verbosity is simultaneously difficult to digest but also very vivid if you force yourself to pay attention, and that's why it helped distract from real pain

some of his stories are pretty hard to read, but most aren't. unlike Robert Chambers whose prose is easier to read.

Lovecraft was not actually a very good writer. His sentence structuring is clunky and he has a weird almost autistic fascination with certain words like cyclopean. He is not great with imagery or building emotion or anything like that at all.

I dont even think he was very bright.

What he did have was an incredibly powerful imagination. The power of that imagination is evident in the fantastical nature of his stories.

he has the same vibe as borges for me. the fact that it's kind of stuffy makes it feel like you're discovering an academic article about the thing that turns out to be fricking crazy and it works for me
