I finished Bleeding Edge, my first Pynchon, two days ago and I'm on the first few pages of Against the Day.

Theres a difference between fiction that takes place in a certain period of history has historical themes than "historical fiction". Go to a bookstore and Pynchon would be in the lit fic section and not the historical fic section.

Historical fiction is the best genre dumbass. If you want to mock someone then make fun of the gays who brag about only reading non fiction.

Prohaska tetralogy, starting with A Sailor from Austria. It's like Flashman but much funnier.

I have almost always found "real" history more interesting than historical fiction.

I'm reading Captivity by György Spiró. Quite an interesting historical fiction book by one of great Hungarian novelists. The life of a israeli protagonist in Roman empire. Don't worry, there's no un-earned pathos in it. I'd recommend to you guys if you need a contemporary book rec.
