I remember reading about a medical researcher in the UK who was going thru old case files and came across a guy who had died in the 1950s and from what the medical records showed, it looked just like AIDS. The researcher got the family to exhume the body and after testing, he discovered the guy in fact did die from AIDS.
So AIDS has been around since at least the post-WWII period but because gays were kept under wraps and so didn't have the opportunity to frick any and every ass in sight, it's spread was limited until the Sexual Revolution made gays more acceptable to society and so gave them more opportunity to frick any and every ass in sight.

HIV was only ever detected in the first place because there was a sudden spike in these extremely rare cancers that appeared particularly common in specific groups like gays, injection drug users, and blood transfusion recipients.
As others itt have said, the gay community of the 70's and 80's defined itself by a kind of contrarianism. The logic they operated under was essentially "If you are going to hate me and shun me from society for wanting to have sex with men, then I'll have as much man-sex as possible to piss you off!". Which led to the belief that not being maximally promiscuous at all times was a "straight cultural norm" that they were going to reject just as straight society had rejected them.
So obviously given this toxic mindset people telling them to stop having so sex just made them have even more out of a misplaced sense of "resistance". Remember as a shunned and marginalized group they were extremely paranoid and conspiracy minded. They stopped reporting because it burnt itself out and wasn't some apocalyptic event. Monkey Pox is not a major disease, only 1% of cases are fatal and it goes away after a few weeks. As a gay person myself, I've never understood that sort of "gay culture" at all. I find it really perplexing and off-putting. I've known ever since I hit puberty that I was attracted to men, but all I've ever wanted is a typical, domestic life with a cute partner I can love and trust and grow old with. The idea of fricking hundreds of strangers while shooting drugs in some gross club bathroom is so far removed from anything I want out of life that I honestly find it difficult to even relate to such people as *humans* at all, let alone feel any sort of homosexual kinship with them.

I don't understand it at all. I truly don't understand how drag has such mass appeal, and I hate hate hate how much drag queens are now the "face" of LGBT people as a whole in the public image nowadays.
Drag is pretty much the exact opposite of anything I want to be, but I almost feel "coerced" into supporting it in a twisted way. idk.
What was your relationship with your mom like?
If you are a westerner and you get HIV nowadays it is one hundred percent your fault and likely the result of a bugchasing fetish. There are drugs to prevent getting HIV even if you have unprotected sex and drugs to keep the HIV from being detectable in your semen and blood. gays take drugs constantly so adding an extra pill isn't that difficult. Literally just take your fricking medicine and you will be fine, how is it this hard? Even if you don't take it beforehand you can take a different pill days later and still be fine.
