Everybody's really young in the books, to the point that it feels unrealistic. I can see why the show aged everyone up.

And they were exposed to the harshness of the world at a younger age than today’s overprotected children

I love this argument because it's always used to defend women being raped. If you depict the grimness of war by having every female character threatened with rape, but the same thing never happens to a male character, despite the fact that more men get raped in the military than women, then your 'gritty realism card' definitely gets revoked. I don’t see you arguing for an accurate portrayal of everything in your fiction all the time. Most people seem fine without accurate portrayal of what personal hygiene was really like in 1300 CE in their medieval fantasy media. (Realistically, Robb Stark and Jon Snow rarely bathed or brushed their teeth or hair). In real life, people have to go to the bathroom. In movies and books, they don’t show that very much, and I don't see you people claiming that's bad.

There's no reason they can't pick and choose what elements they want to focus on for atmosphere. I'm sure men do canonically get raped in asoiaf anyway but even if they didn't... who cares? Authors can write whatever they want. If someone likes penning perverted war rape fiction I literally don't care because some of the best art is made by schizos with offensive taste.

the moment you think a writer has to "defend" what happens to imaginary people in his writing you are already a crazy person. dumb holes can't take control over their own lives so they go online and demand writers alter the content of their writing, it's a kind of female neurosis

          1. The idea that Medieval people rarely washed is a theoughly debunked myth.
          2. Male-on-male rape is frequently depicted in the ASoIaF books, both as a consequence of war, and otherwise.
          3. People go to the bathroom in ASoIaF all the rucking time, too. The first thing any character points out, when they find themselves in a dungeon, is whether said prison has a proper privy, or requires them to shit in a bucket; every time someone sets up camp, they describe the digging of a latrine, Arya Stark has to go iut of her way to piss alone, so no-one notices she has no wiener, and Tywin Lannister is literally murdered while taking a shit.

          wut since when?
A brutal male-male rape left emotionally unresolved until one or the other involved dies randomly and unsatisfyingly is pithy as frick. I'll admit I can't think of a lot of examples, but I'm certainly not pissed or suggesting it's unrealistic.
          >Realistically, Robb Stark and Jon Snow rarely bathed or brushed their teeth or hair)
This in fact uniquely pisses me off about Western period film and TV. Nobody can be truly ugly. Japs don't have the same problem, their period movies are full of hideous trolls with fricked up mouths. But noooooooooo here in the west we gotta make everybody look like they appeared in this setting suddenly fresh out of the packaging. It's shit.

weird that you see it as modern liberal degeneracy when the AoC in medieval Europe was 7 and for most of American history it was 10

There was no age of consent in medieval europe you moron. People weren't supposed to have sex outside of marriage, girls were very sheltered, marriages didn't happen without approval from both families, sex means piv impregnation so that wouldn't happen too early and if it were to it would be highly improper and earn the ire of both families and general polite society. You mistakenly believe law is more powerful than social norms. This isn't true today, even with massive modern states, so it sure as hell wasnt true then when barely anything was regulated or considered the government's business. Also, the idea of sexual consent was not a concept that existed then. Assenting to your family's arranged marriage would be the closest. Or maybe having sex with a maiden you aren't formally courting for marriage.

It's over. Humanity is over. Girls should be giving birth at 16-17 at the latest, not fricking late 20's and men should be impregnating females in their early 20's. We are slowly being degenerated and lead to extinction by pure ignorance and societal conditioning. Kids grow up sick and diseased, people die without ever experiencing them as adults all because of made-up bullshit age rules not supported by our own nature and the reality we live in. I'm so sick of this world.

Accurately portraying women in medieval settings?

  12. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Daenaerys' character-arc in book one is about her learning to recognise, and embrace her own agency. She's spent her entire-life as a de fact slave, to her brother, enduring his verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, "Show them that you have a woman's body now.", and unthinkingly obeying, and accepting his orders. When she attempts to mentally prepare herself for Drogo to rape her, and he says "No?", and backs off, being as gentle as possible, until he gets a yes, it's not a defence/justification of what he does to her afterwards (she's 13 for frick's sake, and the story never lets you forget that), it's the inciting incident to that character arc. Each chapter involves her becoming bolder/less restraind in explicitly asking for what she wants, then outrught demanding it, in saying no to people, and in insisting that she deserves better treatment, climaxxing in her insisting that she's not a princess, but a queen, and getting her bloodriders to kneel before her, despite her being a woman, because she's the mother of dragons.

The fact that her first act of agency comes in the form of traumatic, but less traumatic than expected sexual encounter is by no means incindental, the subjugation of women and girls through sexual violence is a recurring theme throughout the books, and having Dany not simply say no to someone, but *realise that saying no is even an option in the first place* in the single lowest, most servile, and physically overpowered moment of her entire arc, is just good writing. Framing that as her "Learning to like her rape" is just fricking dumb.

You should see his sci fi
    >He stank of sweat and sulfur, like all who walked the streets of Skrakky, but there was no help for that. It would be better if he could bathe first, but the room did not have a bath. Just a sink, double bed with sheets that looked dirty even in the dimness, a corpse.
    >She lay there naked, staring at nothing, breathing shallow breaths. Her legs were spread; ready. Was she always that way, Trager wondered, or had the man before him arranged her like that? He didn't know. He knew how to do it (he did, he did, he'd read the books Cox gave him, and there were films you could see, and all sorts of things), but he didn't know much of anything else. Except maybe how to handle corpses. That he was good at, the youngest handler on Skrakky, but he had to be. They had forced him into the handlers' school when his mother died, and they made him learn, so that was the thing he did. This, this he had never done (but he knew how, yes, yes, he did); it was his first time.
    >He came to the bed slowly and sat to a chorus of creaking springs. He touched her and the flesh was warm. Of course. She was not a corpse, not really, no; the body was alive enough, a heartbeat under the heavy white breasts, she breathed. Only the brain was gone, ripped from her, replaced with a deadman's synthabrain. She was meat now, an extra body for a corpsehandler to control, just like the crew he worked each day under sulfur skies. She was not a woman. So it did not matter that Trager was just a boy, a jowly frog-faced boy who smelled of Skrakky. She (no it, remember?) would not care, could not care.
    >Emboldened, aroused and hard, the boy stripped off his corpsehandler's clothing and climbed in bed with the female meat. He was very excited; his hands shook as he stroked her, studied her. Her skin was very white, her hair dark and long, but even the boy could not call her pretty. Her face was too flat and wide, her mouth hung open, and her limbs were loose and sagging with fat.
    >On her huge breasts, all around the fat dark nipples, the last customer had left tooth-marks where he'd chewed her. Trager touched the marks tentatively, traced them with a finger. Then, sheepish about his hesitations, he grabbed one breast, squeezed it hard, pinched the nipple until he imagined a real girl would squeal with pain. The corpse did not move. Still squeezing, he rolled over on her and took the other breast into his mouth.
    >And the corpse responded.
