Holy shit, just reading On Physiognomy and he is the proto-blackpiller. What the heck.

>As a matter of fact, the face of a man gives us a fuller and more interesting information than his tongue; for his face is the compendium of all he will ever say, as it is the one record of all his thoughts and endeavors. And, moreover, the tongue tells the thought of one man only, whereas the face expresses a thought of nature itself: so that everyone is worth attentive observation, even though everyone may not be worth talking to. And if every individual is worth observation as a single thought of nature, how much more so is beauty, since it is a higher and more general conception of nature, is, in fact, her thought of a species. This is why beauty is so captivating: it is a fundamental thought of nature: whereas the individual is only a by-thought, a corollary.

However to slightly mellow it

>In private, people always proceed upon the principle that a man is what he looks; and the principle is a right one, only the difficulty lies in its application. For though the art of applying the principle is partly innate and may be partly gained by experience, no one is a master of it, and even the most experienced is not infallible. But for all that, whatever Figaro may say, it is not the face which deceives; it is we who deceive ourselves in reading in it what is not there.

it's really just schop seething over hegel again. read hegel's chapter on the subject in the PoS.

yes. Lavater didn't think so, but then again, Lavater was an idiot. The material sign is considered to signify spiritual something-ness. It implies a type of predetermination that lies in both spirit and material. It is in the very least a upheaval of the usual mind-over-matter.

that's not what his critique was, and besides, hegel was physiognomically intelligent-looking. same goes for goethe, though not lichtenberg.

both in section C.v.A.c. "Observation of self-consciousness in its relation to its immediate actuality. Physiognomy and Phrenology"

Hegel looks like the homeless guy that keeps trying to break into my apartment building.

yeah but that was later in his life. physiognomy analyses what is static, therefore it doesn't analyze his saggy face and fricked up hairline.

He isn't wrong. Barring accidents or some sort of terrible disease your face says a lot about you. Your ancestry, your psychological health, your instincts, your vices and your strengths. You can tell if a man is a good fighter, a thief or a liar from his face. If you can trust him, etc. Your thoughts partially change your face. This is why attractive people are generally very positive and bubbly. They have positive reinforcement from their looks and their thoughts compound further to change their physiognomy. That's why being sad, angry and depressed also changes your face, your facial expressions carve your wrinkles and fine lines in your face. Very rarely you can cheat one's face, but more often than not you can tell hidden things through their eyes, hands and posture.

Astrological ascendant is also very closely tied to your appearance. Mine is Leo, and it explains a lot.

Interesting. What are the implications of an androgynous face? I get mistaken for a woman fairly often. I'm often described as a "pretty man". Kinda sucks that I'll never be seen as a manly man, but androgynous beauty is a decent trade off I suppose.

How would you apply this thinking to actors? They have such cool and handsome faces which you'd think they would be warriors or intelligent men but then say the most homosexual liberal shit imaginable and come across as low IQ

Brad Pitt is nothing like Achilles despite his beautiful face. In reality he cannot even control his own family, his son is a troony and comes across as a soft hippie homosexual in his interviews. Same goes for other beautiful men like David Gandy , Dicaprio o Chio Lachowski

Really only Alain Delon seems to have a masculine and mysterious personality that is congruent with his looks

The real issue is that beautiful people are generally better in many ways because they are afforded more opportunities, but ugly people also form strength against their ugliness. It's easy to judge a beautiful physiognomy but you have to be a true master to tell when an ugly person actually possesses a great spirit because their tells are not ones you would expect.

Only the sage can distinguish "bad ugly" from "good ugly".

      Background on Physiognomy:
The premise of physiognomy is that the physical appearance is symbolic expressions of personality traits.
Virtues are shown by handsome traits and vices by ugly deformed shapes.
Cartoonists can draw these shapes and people who aren't face blind will know what personality traits are being show by the features alone.
Supposedly in the afterlife, it is somewhat like living inside a dream, so every shape is supposed to have symbolic meaning and spirits can read thoughts and personalities very easily.

      On Handsome Criminals:
The handsome features represent dignified personality traits. For example Bundy is probably intelligent and well motivated.
However he also has some evil traits, most notably the eyes being the window to the soul, showing that his heart is rotten.

Anyways to prove that there is some truth to physiognomy, look at charicatures of extreme vices and virtues - such as extreme greed, extreme pride, etc. You will notice there are facial features that show these traits.

Yes, neonteny is a thing and mutagenic load can be inferred from a face (even foot fetishists probably have synesthesia in this respect, the appendage being itself a body roadmap of sorts).

Schopenhauer was wrong here. In this essay he says that the ugliness of face is the result of ugly personal thoughts but I would disagree.

I have seen really beautiful boys getting totally fricked over by poverty and their material circumstances and vice versa. World is cruel place he himself said that then why he said that only your personal thoughts leave their scare on skin? What about the scars of this terrible world out there and this eternal flow of time?

Schopenhauer-sama disappointed me with this essay.

In the science of physiognomy, the extreme facial features of animals are thought to be the extreme personification of personality traits.
A lion is known for pride, an owl for wisdom, a sloth for sloth, a leopard for sneakyness.
People who have these personality traits will look like these animals.
People often look like their pets, or the pets are an expression of a part of their personality.
    Beware the pitbull owner.
