Well its target demographic is literally teenage girls. One of Douge Walker’s best videos is the one where he says everyone who b***hes about Twilight is just picking on low hanging fruit. The vid is probably deleted by now but it was awfully prescient way back when it was popular to hate on this series which was never trying to be anything serious to begin with.
i read it in elementary school (lol i remember one of my teachers barred me from reading it) and liked it. read it again several years later and came to the same conclusion as OP, dunno why OP thinks they have a groundbreaking opinion.
i liked the first movie tho, because it really represented how gloomy western washington is
I just had the worst flashback. Twilight is so 2011. At that time it was so popular for everyone to make fun of it even though it’s low hanging fruit for children. Like actual grown men would make the equivalent of modern video essays to b***h about how garbage twilight is. That is so 2011.
>Like actual grown men would make the equivalent of modern video essays to b***h about how garbage twilight is
haha people on this board currently do this but with harry potter
If you were a middle school age girl you would love it and I don’t mean that in a bad way.

I'm OP. I was a bisexual twink when it came out. Had trans feelings but grew up comfortable being male.
I never had a desire to read Twilight. I did read...oh now I remember, the first 30 pages at 17, god what a drab plot. My mind had blocked that memory considering how awful it was.
Re-reading now at 31, it's terrible.

You were already older than the target demo when it was released.
It's nice that Twilight - along with other media like the Star Wars prequels, etc. - are getting "reappraised" years after the fact to try and balance out the over-the-top vociferous reactions they got in the first place. BUT, it must needs be said that those reactions didn't come out of nowhere. Twilight is honestly just very, very poorly-written, even by YA fantasy wish fulfillment standards. I tried to read the series a year or two ago but physically couldn't stomach it past the first book.

That and justin bieber.
it's really sad that a women wrote this for women and market it for them - it really shows how the patriarchy keeps standing with the outmost complicity of women. Male gaze is everywhere in this book, "romantic" men do horrible things that are borderline stalking and act like fricking animals (some of them by quite literally turning into ones) around the women they like, and the whole metaphor of the "so horny for you I'm basically a vampire/werewolf" thing plays into horrible tropes about men libido and women libido, the woman having to be chased by the men, etc. - all to terminate (and terminate me, the reader) into this giant epiphany of motherhood as something magical and holy and Bella being impregnated in one day, and the suffering of childbirth being exaggerated as if she was some sort of goddess for going through them, and men turning from horny to absolutely servile non-entities, and so on and so forth. This is the female correspondent of female characters in male videogames, and it supports the same fricked up system of relationship between men and women. It's sad that most women don't see this.
You can tell OP think he's smart while having accomplished nothing in life besides getting high on his own farts, also thanks for your hot take in 2024, this shit book is probably older than you
it started out as harry potter fanfiction, what did you expect

I never read it. Hated the first movie. Just wanted to see the writing quality. I read two chapters, pure shit.
you’re not the target audience, simple
"Target audience" is not an excuse for making bad art.
