I started reading the History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. It seems like a good book for intro to phil because of how organized it is, but I recently came across some v Reddit tier opinions by the author.
So my question is to what extent has his Reddit mindset influenced his covering of History of Western Philosophy?
He seems pretty objective though but then again I haven't read the philosophers from primary sources.

Read Copleston instead.
Wasn't aware of him. Thank for the recommendation anon. Jesuit Priest > Reddit homo
I got the whole collection, they're frickin awesome
no
He’s the Alfred Rosenberg of Reddit .
None of them have read him, but he is the progenitor of all thought and all thought is grounded in his work .
He read philosophy wrote about it and only picked up this about religion. moron moment
Religion is certainly way more central to humanity than this quote implies. Even if its based on false premises
What a moron
He was far more well read than any of us here. Maybe he just knows about religion what us plebs don't. Reddit atheists are insufferable and their opinions don't come from a place of sincere enquiry nor formal reasearch, but Russell's views did. Maybe he just knows
Vs the moron christcucks of IQfy
Bugmen would not exist without Bertrand Russel.
Not an argument.
definitely an argument. you can tell a lot about a philosopher by their fanbase.
Christcuks wouldn't exist with Jesus so Jesus is le bad
Russel was "well read." Some people may know what I mean by this. I am not saying that he wasn't well read.
Sign of the times I guess, it was in vogue
You care way too much about reddit
Absolute worst attempt at writing a history of philosophy, right next to the first book of Aristotle's Metaphysics. Embarrassingly bad and clearly written for self-interested purposes (setting the stage for their own thought and puffing themselves up).
The early sections on Greek philosophy are very good. But the section on medieval philosophy is utterly bizarre. Hundreds of pages of history about popes and Holy Roman Emperors that has literally nothing to do with philosophy and maybe like 9 pages on Aquinas.
The only thing I can think of is that since Russell is an atheist, it's him trying to troll by indirectly saying that no philosophy happened during this time.
He's the UR redditor. Fedora atheism would not exist without Russel. Self-serving neoliberal humanism would not have been born without Russel. Modern Reddit culture would be inconceivable without Russel.
Just read "Why I Am Not A Christian" and you'll see where it all comes from.
That's correct. The most renowned greeks made up a bunch of bullshit that is either unverifiable or wrong. But trying to formalize thought and rise above the surrounding apes is still worthy of respect.

>read history of philosophy book
>80% of the book is biographical information about philosophers
>10% is the author describing how his own opinions are prefigured in the philosophers
>5% is aphorisms by them with no context
>5% is actual philosophy
which ones aren't like this?
