a). people at r/TrueLit actually read books
b). moderators at r/TrueLit actually enforce the rules and make sure only posts that encourage genuine discussion get through
>r/Books, r/Fantasy, r/Literature, and all of the other similar literature-related boards are for lurking and making fun of; IQfy is for shitposting, and r/TrueLit is for genuine questions and discussion
I will say, I came to lit five years ago because every single other books and writing discussion forum was awful, either the same recycled “reactions” to entry level literature or they were dominated by genre readers who legitimately touted Gardens on the Moon as incomprehensible literature. So I come here and get filtered by deeper discussions and the touting of philosophical works and begin delving more seriously into literature.
This place is no longer the best and only place to seriously discuss literature. We barely even talk about books. You guys really hate admitting this, b it the reality of the situation is that twitterposting and the /misc/immigrants have turned all of the hobbyist boards into low quality soijack farms. Truelit is legitimately much better. It’s still Reddit, still heavily moderated, but it’s the one place that discusses real literature and doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.
>This place is no longer the best and only place to seriously discuss literature. We barely even talk about books. I personally do not have a problem admitting this, and I think most anons who are more concerned with having a place to discuss literature than they are "not being reddit" won't either. We have more and more threads talking about "how to improve IQfy" or "why is IQfy so shitty lately" every day. Last New Year's Eve we had an entire thread of anons saying that they were done with this board and were never coming back (how many of them actually left? Who knows).
>Truelit is legitimately much better. It’s still Reddit, still heavily moderated, but it’s the one place that discusses real literature and doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.
This is true. If you want actual genuine discussion, that's probably the best place to go right now. You can't have a shitposting board and a genuine literature discussion board at the same time. Plus, the weekly general discussion threads are kind of comfy, and the community is small enough that after awhile you get to know most of the regulars. One of the things I actually like is that the moderators use the board themselves, and seem to be pretty transparent about how they run things.
Just checked it for the first time in a year or so and it seems quite comfy I might stay for the read alongs if nothing else this time.
> doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.
I do remember seeing some on there before but it was actually fairly nuanced (at least compared to normal Reddit politics).
Guess I shouldn’t be surprised that people who read a lot are somewhat more tolerant and familiar with different views than their own.
IQfy doesn't talk about books as much as before. That's true. But it has become the best and better read political forum in the open web, and when we do discuss books, it's still miles better than anything you will find in reddit. If you don't like it here, then go there. We won't miss you.
It hasn’t become the best anything on the web.
This board is filled with larpers who spam the same 2 or 3 authors, idk if pol or b had a book club thread but this board just feels like an extension of and battle between those 2 equally moronic sides.
>2 equally moronic sides
If you don't like IQfy culture why do you even come here?
Because odds are that that anon was here first and wanted to discuss material that is on topic, such as books
Try having a genuine discussion about Heidegger, Spengler or Schmitt in reddit and see what happens. Even if you get it going, every post will be so full of self censorship that what's the point?
Try having a discussion about Marx here and watch how fast the thread flies off the rails
But the thing is that you can have a discussion about Marx almost everywhere. Where else you can talk about Spengler than IQfy?
>literature forum
>lit doesn’t talk about books as much as before
>it’s better now
What does this anon mean? Political forum? If only there was a board for that
>But it has become the best and better read political forum in the open web
I can't believe I share this board with unironic r*dditors.
>a). people at r/TrueLit actually read books
truelit doesnt read. See how the complete works of shakespeare is no. 3. just a bunch of tryhards.
b). moderators at r/TrueLit actually enforce the rules and make sure only posts that encourage genuine discussion get through
they stiffle free discussion. If you want to discuss stuff that is right of the left like heidegger, nietzsche, or even deleuze's books, and other modern french books stuff you'll get banned. You can barely even talk about 1984 and definitely not about Brave New World.
Also
>Beloved, No. 53
joke?
I'm so fricking tired of this shit.
>truelit doesnt read. See how the complete works of shakespeare is no. 3. just a bunch of tryhards.
Look at IQfy's Top 100 list you absolute moron.
>they stiffle free discussion. If you want to discuss stuff that is right of the left like heidegger, nietzsche, or even deleuze's books, and other modern french books stuff you'll get banned. You can barely even talk about 1984 and definitely not about Brave New World.
This is not even remotely true. There have been several times when I've come across a discussion there and was surprised to find that they'd even let it stay up; if the post invites genuine literary discussion in good faith, the chances are the mods will let it slide. And if they don't, it's easy to get in contact with them and they are happy to respond and are open to having their minds changed. I've talked to them several times and they all seem like nice dudes and don't fit the 'reddit moderator' stereotype at all.
, No. 53
>joke?
Unless you're ready to give me a genuine argument as to why you think Beloved doesn't belong on a Top 100 list, I don't want to fricking here it. Chances are you're just going to say 'woman + Black person' and leave it at that.
>here it
*hear it.
>Le Guin, Hairy Potter
joke?
>Look at IQfy's Top 100 list you absolute moron.
I never said this board isnt full of homosexuals. At least people here are honest about it.
>literary discussion
yes but here you can get philosophical and cite historical examples without pretense.

Thou shalt ne'er a true maiden be. Thou hast neither womb nor ovary. Thou art a catamite, twist'd by foul perversion of chirurgeon's art to crude fleer'ry of Divine perfection.
All validation as thou receivest like unto Janus' own be, and tepid to boot. 'Pon thy hind, good folk fleer.
Thy good father and kind mother art in troth disgust'd and in shame of thee.
Thy friends doth make sport of thine hideous countenance 'twixt themselves.
By thee art all of Adam's sons utterly repuls'd. Our Lord didst fortuitously permit all menfolk to divine thy fraud with wondrous accuracy.
If by trickery, thou didst 'pon occasion "pass", all gentle folk verily wouldst 'pon closer examination revile thee. By the Lord's arrangement, thy very bones betray thee.
And if 'pon chance thou pliest with drink an unfortunate companion unto thy fetid bed, 'twould soonest fly as drink in the aromas from thine diseas'd, fest'ring wound, the which thou cherish in mockery of Eve's daughters.
Tis certaine that never shalt the devil's spawn pass from thine false womb, thus fruitless art thy efforts to ensnare gentlefolk.
Joy shall likewise escape thee.
'Pon waking, thou paint upon thy face a Deceiver's frippery, but inside thine heart, parlous despair circles like Leviathan, eft t' crush thee 'neath th'unbearable weight.
In the end 'twill be too much to bear - thou shalt find thyself procuring firm rope, mocking the hangman's noble art, and plunging into the bitter abyss of the Divill's embrace, to spend thy days better cavorting with thine masters.
Thine father or mother shall occasion upon thine empty shell and weep, caught 'twixt heartbreak and relief that the shame thou broughtest them hast, anon, abated.
Thine headstone shall reflect thine Christian name, and hist'ry shall record thee a man.
As worms and creatures of the earth feast on thine unholy corpse, thine bones shalt betray thee again - unmistak'bly like unto Adam's.
'Tis thy fate, self-appointed. Ne'er shall thee revoke it.
>If you want to discuss stuff that is right of the left like heidegger, nietzsche, or even deleuze's books, and other modern french books stuff you'll get banned
I dont know how true that is if they're willing to put Céline on a top 100 list
this is one of truelit's mods, you gay
Did you care enough to go to Reddit just now for that screencap or have you had that image for a while?
Yes
>not allowed to talk about bigot Chauvinists
Bruh, why the frick not? How are homies so insanely gay?
Yeah. I only come on here to shitpost. If anyone takes any advice on here serious, they're going to frick themselves up.
r/truelit and r/truefilm are superior to IQfy and IQfy
>r/truefilm
please leave
Can you recommend a good film forum that isn’t IQfy or reddit? Bonus points if it has a sense of humour.
Hm
Sad
You unironically deserve to be banned for life for this post.
You should definitely go back, but you're right in that at this point the board is basically offsite tourists shitposting about the current thing with other offsite tourists, so you might as well go to the source.
>a). people at r/TrueLit actually read books
It's depressing this can't be IQfy.
Reading fiction is a waste of time. I'm glad IQfy has ascended.
Nah. Fiction teaches more than nonfiction unless you are just concerned with facts. And even fiction has facts
what an infantile plebbit opinion.
please go back NOW
Looks the exact same as our list m8.
Apart from no Bible because the ironic Christianity phase hasn't spread there yet.
More like Reddit hasn't gone past the fedora atheist phase yet
Potayto potahto.
>Silver medal is literally Tolstoy
>F-FEDORA!
kys
Redditors love Tolstoy because he writes soap operas for teenaged girls, not because he’s Christian. If anything, his Christianity is their main gripe with him
You have read 0 (zero) books by Tolstoj
>“The absence of the rights of woman does not consist in the fact that she has not the right to vote, or the right to sit on the bench, but in the fact that in her affectional relations she is not the equal of man, she has not the right to abstain, to choose instead of being chosen. You say that that would be abnormal. Very well! But then do not let man enjoy these rights, while his companion is deprived of them, and finds herself obliged to make use of the coquetry by which she governs, so that the result is that man chooses ‘formally,’ whereas really it is woman who chooses. As soon as she is in possession of her means, she abuses them, and acquires a terrible supremacy.”
>“But where do you see this exceptional power?”
>“Where? Why, everywhere, in everything. Go see the stores in the large cities. There are millions there, millions. It is impossible to estimate the enormous quantity of labor that is expended there. In nine-tenths of these stores is there anything whatever for the use of men? All the luxury of life is demanded and sustained by woman. Count the factories; the greater part of them are engaged in making feminine ornaments. Millions of men, generations of slaves, die toiling like convicts simply to satisfy the whims of our companions.
>“Women, like queens, keep nine-tenths of the human race as prisoners of war, or as prisoners at hard labor. And all this because they have been humiliated, because they have been deprived of rights equal to those which men enjoy. They take revenge for our sensuality; they catch us in their nets.
>“Yes, the whole thing is there. Women have made of themselves such a weapon to act upon the senses that a young man, and even an old man, cannot remain tranquil in their presence. Watch a popular festival, or our receptions or ball-rooms. Woman well knows her influence there. You will see it in her triumphant smiles.
>“As soon as a young man advances toward a woman, directly he falls under the influence of this opium, and loses his head. Long ago I felt ill at ease when I saw a woman too well adorned,—whether a woman of the people with her red neckerchief and her looped skirt, or a woman of our own society in her ball-room dress. But now it simply terrifies me. I see in it a danger to men, something contrary to the laws; and I feel a desire to call a policeman, to appeal for defence from some quarter, to demand that this dangerous object be removed.
Not him but Family Happiness is absolutely a soap opera. Him seething about women later in life because of how much he hated his marriage doesn't change the content of his older books.
I've read War and Peace and it did come off as a soap opera despite all the historical epic aspects and "philosophy"
Lmao. I recently read Bergson and he makes the exact same mindlessly optimistic (you'd think post-Darwin they'd be wiser) prediction that the bestowing of rights of women would modify their behaviour, especially consumerist and general attention-seeking shit, in a more masculine direction, lessening the need for the ridiculous material gluts pervade things like fashion or cosmetic industries, these days.
Oh how little they knew how bad it all was!

Both have been on lit lists you tard
we did it ebic trol style
>Man without Qualities and Anna Karenina arent number 1 followed by a huge power gap
havent read the list furher
There's literally more diversity in lit's top 100
DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH
How many voters would you estimate have actually read all of Shakespeare's work or even volume 1 of Capital?
It’s nearly identical to ours besides for some obviously reddit-tier books
indeed indeed
Maybe culture is predetermined after all, and freedom and political belief have little to no influence on our way of life.
Not surprising because they're IQfy refugees
Truelit is just filled with people exactly the McCullers troon who spams here
Is there a website that has a bigger inferiority complex than IQfy in regards to Reddit?
>reddit is le good
Why are they like this?
I wouldnt even know about reddit if they wouldn't come here.
So what should be done about it?
Simply add reddit posting, to the pedo, porn, and violence posting category in the board rules.
Reddit is like the popular brother while IQfy is the moronic loser who still lives in mom’s basement acting in degenerate ways. The latter is only good to laugh at once in a while. This site used to be so much better. I doubt IQfy could even make a top 100 this year because it has fallen off so hard
both are kinda bad to be quite honest. it is just that IQfy is a bit older
the problem with IQfy is that /misc/tards usually leave their containment board
This. Truelit and r/literature are at least on topic. IQfy used to be way superior not anymore. I’d be very surprised if even half of this board has read a book in the last year. There are literally anons here who don’t read who have made this board their home. I don’t get it
anons use literature as a fashion accessory because it makes them feel smart and they can act like they're above "NPC leftist bugmen"
>Now I know this is a controversial opinion but hear me out, Reddit is ACTUALLY bette-
*slams wooden door*
He is probably right on that a lot of anons probably don't even bother reading anything. One indicator of it are the memes. They used to be somewhat IQfy related, now they are scarce and most "meme shit" is some stupid crap shilling some booktuber or whatever.
Also look at the disappearance of low effort mainstay on this board. Way less stack threads, less waycr, less top 5, less post a get a , less write a story for this pic, etc. Those threads used to get hundreds of replies every time. Those low hanging fruit threads at least showed anons were interested in literature. Now everything has a pol or incel slant
Looks the same as IQfy's. Why does everyone have the same favorite books?
CURIOUS.
the upvotes are coming from inside the house
>melville, dosto and tolstoy bad cause reddit reads them
yeah cause they're objectively greats
I cannot call people homosexuals on reddit.
You can on some gay subs.
I just did the nae nae
Since no one else posted it, this is "ours".

>It's kind of cheating to include collections like 'Complete Shakespeare'; and if they're going to do that they might as well roll Kafka into 'Complete Kafka', and then I'd be tempted to include things like 'Complete Poems' of Yeats or Eliot, or prolific authors whose total corpus of work crush the lesser entries on either list
>The Hobbit is better than any of the books in the LOTR trilogy
>I like Hamsun's Growth of the Soil more than Hunger but whatever
>Finnegan's Wake is trash and Joyce is overrated more generally
/lit/'s list is somewhat better (though both lists have a non-trivial number of shitty meme entries). Both lists are guilty of this, but the Reddit list is way too obviously influenced by parroted opinions and availability and social desirability biases. I doubt very much that, collectively, they have gone out of their way to discover and read books that are in any way obscure. Note also certain absurd overrepresentations: Reddit list skews much more female than it should (and three instances of Woolf in the top 50? Get the frick outta here). DeWitt's book is massively pushed among the feminized academic crowd and isn't even very good (go watch Seven Samurai, listen to Schubert, Scarlatti, and Ravel, develop an interest in advanced math; there, I've saved you the effort of reading that mediocrity). I like Zadie Smith, but she's not Top-100-all-time good. Morrison and Baldwin and Ellison are similarly on their Top 100 because muh diversity and not because their work merits inclusion.
Finally, I want to see a longer list that doesn't care how many times each author appears on it. IQfy at least has the balls to include Dostoyevsky as much as he deserves.
It's almost the exact same list and showcases that IQfy is unironically just reddit for racists and performative conservatives.
Subhuman, le r/gaylit is made up of IQfy refugees and IQfy lists are way older you stupid homosexual
Okay redditor
Far worse than the Reddit one
>Das kapital
>Mein Kampf
>Bibble
>Finnegan's wake
>No longer human
Kek litsissies really be like this?
litsissies do be that way, yes.
2020 had the best list, very few r*dditrefugees were here.
This reads like something a 14-16 year old would make for the epic LULZ XD
>Marx

>White fragility
>Leibowitz
>Kant
Looks like allot of r*dditrefugees are here.

OK I stopped counting what is going on with this chart
>no Siddartha
>Harry Potter
In the trash
What the frick is this thread. Are we getting raided by morons trying to gaslight us into thinking reddit is better or are there unironically so many redditors here?
If you took a look at this board in the past 6/7 years and didn't realize that the original demographic of the board was slowly being displaced by offsite tourists more interested in current politics than in literature you probably are a tourist yourself.
I honestly don't think we have that much tourists. It's just that we have discussed the same books over and over to death and culture war-posting releases more dopamine by now.
that list is objectively shit.
IQfy list is only somewhat shit because trolls meme Hitler to #1 and other random lulz into the list.
These morons actually think Middlemarch, Pride and prejudice and bronte deserve such a high rank.
>also
zero philosophy
and incredibly American list (yes this includes the hispanic american authors as american not because they are from the americas though; you understand
I’m guessing you’re one of those “muh w*men” types of posters
oh, how funny. No that was not intended.
ahahah what an awkWARD coincidence
Ironically a lot of this board is made up from the 2016 fallout from Reddit.
IQfy is Reddit central.
Marx is fiction? Also Harry Potter is on there so I'm not taking it seriously.
what's wrong with harry potter?
It's 'young adult' not 'literature'.
You realize both of those have made the lit chart before?
>3 Woolf novels
>2 Toni Morrison books may be overkill
>The Secret History (seriously?)
>The Remaining of the Day way way too high
>Murakami
>The Handmaid Tale (seriously?)
>Harry Potter
There are probably some other questionable picks I'm missing. Other than that, it's not a bad list, but you can tell a lot of those books were only picked because some reddit homosexuals thought it was important that they were represented. They do have a few great picks that are arguably missing in our list though, like Under The Volcano, Middlemarch, Sutree or Krasznahorkai. Overall our list is a lot better both in content and in order though, even if it isn't perfect either.
why care what other people consider good?
People on Reddit read. The same can’t be said about /lit /.
This is sad but true. It used to be a joke but not so anymore. This board cares about posturing more now
feels like the same list but more effeminate
I helped make this list :^)
Grew out of IQfy when I was 20 and new 15 year olds took over, only come back to shitpost occasionally.
Congratulations on winning one internet.
>100 Harry Potter
>88 Dubliners
The problem with r/Truelit is that redditors from other book subreddits, all garbage, come there and frick things up. r/Literature and r/Books are worse than any other internet forum on literature. It's the exact same issue IQfy has with /misc/ tourism, but instead of seething incels they get YA readers. Don't know which is worse.
r/Bookscirclejerk is a better shitposting forum than IQfy though.
/r/badliterature was the best lit forum in the whole internet. Too bad it's dead now. It was like if /leftypol/ had a IQfy analogue. It had all the good shit post from IQfy, but none of the awful politics from /misc/. I don't even understand why there are so many right wingers here. It's a known fact that right wingers can't into literature.
>The problem with r/Truelit is that redditors from other book subreddits, all garbage, come there and frick things up
This is not the experience I've had. Any discussion about YA or genre fiction outside of the weekly general discussion thread doesn't make it through (I tried; I make a sockpuppet account and tried to make several threads on 'the literary merit of YA' on there and none of them got approved. I think they knew I was shitposting because one of them asked me about the age of my account and then I was permanently banned from there)
Is Moby Dick actually good? Not being from USA you'd always hear about US kids reading it in school, but I can't imagine it being that good. I just assumed it getting ranked no. 1 in every lit list is some sort of joke I'm missing out on.
Yes it's good
Melville is probably one of the only American writers that deserves to be placed alongside the other greats (Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Joyce, Proust, etc) in world literature
Not bad but Dune being above Lord of the Rings is a crime
