How do botnets make money nowadays? I knew ad fraud was huge in the 2010s but it has died down.

Governments aren't smart enough to run botnets of considerable size. All of them are controlled by basement dwellers.

My brother in christ, just ddg "botnet" and look at the news tab. All it mentions is russian and chinese APTs exploiting routers and the FBI shutting them down.

Botnets are mostly created by loners. The only reason mainstream media claims it's done by state actors is to steer sentiment against China and Russia.

            >he doesn't know about search engine optimization and caching

Google just made their caches private btw.
They just destroyed decades of publicly cached access for the sake of profit and to control what you see, probably at the "recommendation" of the government or a conglomerate of corpo homosexuals.
The racket is real. They are a technocratic racket that is being developed now to limit your thinking. To contain you and keep ideas away from their useful pawns deliberately.

Not if I don't use them, simple as. If you don't connect to their servers, they have no influence on you. IP range ban google crawlers and boom, you're golden.

Use their own weapons against them. Always use their own weapons. Always. Google thought they're entitled to crawling everything using traffic, eh? Then FRICK THEM.

IIRC their crawlers could go past paywalls (e.g. scrape news articles for Google News) and people were able to use Google's cache service to bypass paywalls. Companies sued Google and they stopped providing this service to the public.

Anon... the governments HIRE the basement dwellers now

No they impoverish and psychologically whip them into acting on their behalf while exploiting the open briefcase forced into all pcs nowadays.
That way they and their financial racketeers can leverage themselves over you without knowing how to use a computer.

Of course, if a basement dweller were to work around those backdoors and aim for financial/legal institutions in particular, such a racket would lose all ability to control said dwellers quickly.
Which is going to happen btw.
And there is nothing they can do to prevent it. It's a matter of time. Even with backdoors, it's a matter of time.

So that's why they play the psyop game and try to get dwellers to attack each other and not the government/financial racket - through things like race/sex/how-much-of-a-homosexual-you-are/age/etc.

      WTF is AstroTurf?

Astroturf is in contrast to grassroots. Grassroots is real people organizing themselves beginning at the basic bottom level in order to spread some message, do some activism, or try to achieve some political goal.
Astroturf is corporate entities, often 3rd party corporate marketing entities, working/hired to manufacture a movement as though there is some phony widespread 'grassroots' consensus and support. Online they will pretend to be random real people on social media platforms with real opinions but actually the accounts are all being run off of a script, a playbook, a list of polished talking points. One of the goals may be to recruit useful idiots to increase their reach and spread their influence for free, but ultimately it's corporate messaging spread for pay.

In the past legitimate platforms would attempt to stop spammers (these entities are essentially a type of spammer) and one way to detect them might be multiple accounts using the same IP address. Ergo botnet.
In modern times the social media campaign entities make friends with the PR liaisons at the social media platforms so there's no need to go through that trouble. It's approved. Either because of ad spend, paying for access as a service, or because the social media platform or its administration is participating in the same NGO narrative network as the PR firm running the astroturf.

being a blackhat is like being a Black person but on the internet. it's reserved for poor people from poor countries. you dont make shit mining coins, but $10k a year is a lot to someone living in Bangladesh. You'll make triple that working at walmart.

If you ask, you probably shouldnt do that since you will get caught very soon after you start.

Actually, cybercriminals can make a hell lot of money (assuming that they wont get caught). Just look at how big those ransoms can get. Even those who manage remotely-popular MaaS will make more than that.

Most cybercriminals this days make money from attacking big companies since its just more profitable. Unlike normal people they have money to spend and sometimes they might be easier target than regular person. Those who still attack average people are usually midwits with commercial or homebrew malware who try to make a quick buck on the side.
