Read Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's translation, Bhagavad Gita As It Is, 1972 MacMillan edition. After that read The Krishna Book. While doing both these things, read Introduction to Sanatana Dharma by Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya.

That is the way to go about it, I would also recommend studying other traditions too, you will find yourself wanting to at some point, but this is a good foundation - also it's not all theoretical, and so forth.
