How do you get over the fact Marcus Aurelius wife cheated on him with a gladiator?

I have been into stoicism for a while and have been using it to cope with life but learning this info has made me second guess the entire philosophy. Now whenever I try to be stoic I think about Marcus sitting in the corner writing meditations while his wife gets brutalized by a gigachad gladiator. Now whenever I think about stoicism it seems like a cuck philosophy. Was Marcus really the Destiny of his time? How can I get over this?

Marcus Aurelius is not a major stoic figure, he was a guy who had a general interest in philosophy, he never even refers to himself as a Stoic, and he didn't bring any new ideas to the table.

He is only seen as a major figure today because his workbook(what he wrote for himself) is one of the few surviving works, his work isn't taken that seriously in academic circles because it is pretty much just repeating what past philosophers thought. Also the guy was a Roman Emperor, not a normal person, and he wanted to give an image of forgiveness(he didn't kill any senators in his time either) so killing his wife would've been a big no-no and would be contrary to what he stated he would do, and you don't really know the political decisions behind his actions.

I'm not sure why you are second guessing an entire philosophy based on rumour from the historia augusta which is not seen as a reliable or accurate source. There would be nothing not ''Stoic'' about you dumping your partner if she cheated on you, it would probably actually be the most rational decision you could take as such a person has shown themselves not to be trustworthy, and would better help you move on.

I think we should also stop with the idea that Marcus Aurelius was some kind of sage, he wasn't, no such person has ever existed. Marcus' supposed decision to spare his wife was his own decision, not anything to do with Stoic philosophy, many of the major philosophers such as Epictetus decided not even to have partners.

This, Aurelius is a neo-stoic at best.
Furthermore, the progenitor of stoicism favoured free-love, for which he was lambasted

This thread again? Short answer because it's an anti-idolatristic thread steering away from the board topic.

Most people on r/stoicism and the other ones generally don't know what Stoicism actually is, as literally the majority of them have only skimmed through the meditations, which isn't even meant to teach anyone, it's just a guy writing reminders to himself.

Anyone who actually wants to learn it starts with the discourses of epictetus, people only start with meditations these days because it has been hyped up by marketeers like ryan holiday.

I want Destiny to frick me. Behind his annoying stage presence and virtue signaling, there is just something about him that screams good wiener. Notice how despite his pudgy face and unremarkable body, he has those piercing blue pretador eyes.

I came across Destiny on Grindr, and he wanted to suck my wiener (he mentioned on his profile that he only does oral). I didn't end up doing it though because I was afraid of STDs

It's always there for you whenever you want to take the first step in leaving your stoic phase. Take your time anon, you can read it anyhow just to see if it is worth moving past stoicism at all, if you want to stay one then there is no shame to be had, there are better stoic thinkers.

It's simple: Some people will always be animals whereas others will strive to better than what they currently are.

Don't let his wife sour your view on his philosophy, the poet knows better than the animal.

I don't know, if you are going to accuse someone, past or present of such a thing, then I think some kind of evidence of is necessary. Tell me, do you believe every single thing you hear and read?.

Right my translation which is the Gregory Hayes says:
          >He'll look calmly at the distinct beauty of old age in men, women, and at the loveliness of children
That doesn't imply he actually had sex with them to me, and even the paragraph in your book implies self control rather than giving in to desire. I think we should also remember that pederasty was viewed differently in those times, and certain people who the stoics looked up to like Diogenes discouraged it.

I'm not sure we should claim Marcus was some ideal Stoic either, as from what i remember he never actually calls himself one

If you translate the original greek version through google it is almost completely different and makes no reference to boys:
          >[ 3.2.3 ] so that , if he has passion and a deeper understanding of what is happening in the whole , there is almost nothing but glory to him and to the subsequent events , as he is composed . And this one , and the true chasms of beasts, is not seen in vain , or what the writings and forged imitations show , and the writing and the old stone of age and time , and what was given in play to his own happy eyes , he is able to see : and many such things are not all possible , but but to him by nature , these same works are approached in a genuine way .

So who actually knows what is true.

He's probably one of very few roman emperors who didn't mess with boys. At the start of Meditations he praises his adopted father Antoninus Pius for abstaining from them

Living a flawless life isn't the metric for a perfect philosiphy, but how one deals with their misfortunes that show up during ones life. If your philosipher kills himself or was clearly miserable or unsuccesful by his own metrics than his philosiohy is shit tier, alike Nietsche.

This isn't actually the point, the point isn't about not caring, it's about thinking rationally and placing value in what is up to us(our voliition), in every situation you always have some amount of power.

If it is raining, then i don't care for example still shows some emotional response to externals, if it is raining, then i will go inside is a rational response free from any form of negative judgement.

This is why studying Stoic propositional logic is also kind of important alongside the ethics and physics, as it lets you think in a more logical manner.
