Personally I finished the first book like 15 years ago and re-reading it now. I remember surprisingly little, but at the same time feel like I enjoy it more this time around. I'm reading it aloud for my 1 and 3 year old. They're not interested in the least of course, but it helps tremendously with staying focused for some reason...
I like the two long parties in Guermantes but fwr this seems to be one of Proust-reading IQfy's 'least favorite' parts. I think I like the final book the best, tying up loose ends, waxing literary, autobiographical, philosophical, etc.
I finished 6th book a month ago, I plan to read last one before end of the year
3rd book was a chore to read but otherwise they're very good and easy read
i always hear mixed things about it that put me off from ever starting it >it's the greatest prose ever put to paper >but everything after the first volume sucks >but actually only the first four volumes are worth reading because proust was only able to finish those before dying >but also those last few volumes aren't worth reading anyways
It’s actually the last three, moron, and he finished “drafting” those — he just died before he could edit them. Since Proust was neurotic and wrote notes for everything, his brother was about edit the three volumes in accordance with Proust’s vision.
I love Proust: he’s the greatest dyel-reader filter imaginable. Only morons get filtered by him and refuse to read him. Feels great knowing I am in the select few to have read all four volumes
What's there to be proud of? Did you know that Proust called it "In Search of Lost Time" as a joke to mock his readers? The lost time is the time you wasted on that pointless series of books. Proust is mocking you from beyond the grave, he stole that time from you and you are never going to get it back.
started learning French just to read this.
i read translation before, but as soon as i found out the prose in translation was made much more 'mild' and castrated almost, i started to learn French (i haven't learn a single thing)
#5 I think about giving up a lot but I think he's banging Albertine right now so now's not a good time
I have read it thrice
Yeah, n a here as well
x2
Impressive. What are your favorite parts?

And then people will blame the vaccine...

yeah I hated those parties
2nd chapter 2nd book then i decided that i dont give a frick about the book and stopped.
I read it all in my first try.
A whole month for the first book (partly sedated).
And another month for the rest (caffeinated).
I'm low IQ and was never a literature guy so my mind was wandering a lot, but it's not hard to follow.
7 books, that's Harry Potter for adults.
Uhhh huh
I made it through the overture and a few pages of combray. But I haven't given up on it.
Best translation?

the first two books are for sure worth reading. reading the first book is hardly a commitment

Now that's a shocking revelation
How could he betray me like this?
The last few volumes is when you see the scope of the whole thing. It is a book best viewed from a distance because you get the full perspective then
