I did it the other way around. First I made my money, then I gave some away.
It makes a lot more sense, if you stop to think about it.
Try to see it from the other side, if you're stingy and cheap, people don't like to do business with you, some might even think you aren't successful with what you do and can't afford a different behavior.
Doesn't mean you should waste your money or give it away for the sake of giving it away. Invest in people (of your community) or things that are useful for other people, help someone out who has potential, if you hire someone pay them well, that kind of stuff.
