I don't see why number of characters would matter anyway.
1, maybe 2 chars or attempts to make it even harder before they go to other methods of verification or diversify the methods. $chan pass completely undermines the point of having a captcha in the first place, allowing bots to roam free anyways.
It's mostly been 6 chars for me, captchas that appear to be 5 chars have been red herrings.

A small handful (less than 1%) of users spammed IQfy over 13 years ago so now we all (99.9%) have to fill out an absurd amount of captcha.
