How powerful are they, realistically?

Is basic b***h encryption/VPNs enough to keep them away from your data?

You should know, young moron, that most of the mainstream encryption algorithms has been designed in a way so that the culprits know their way around it.

NSA has every bit of data that flows through the internet, and they have the keys or other means to decrypt it. You can't prevent any of that.
What you can do is not be of interest to them. You want your data to get filed away into an archive never to be looked at. The moment someone feels the need to look at your data, they will know everything.
And remember they're the government. So if your internet data doesn't tell them what they think they need to know, they can just send a man to watch over your shoulder at whatever the frick you're doing.

      they don't.
      > and they have the keys or other means to decrypt it.
they can only decrypt things that they've had a hand in designing it. they don't need "keys" for that, Black person.

Good lord that sounds fricking terrifying. How do you even stay off their radar in the first place?

I can only imagine the tens of millions of weird or edgy teenagers/adults in the 2000s and 2010s.....posting, doing, or saying weird and edgy shit.....not realizing they were just creating blackmail fuel to be used against them at any point in time in the future if they occupy positions of wealth, power and influence and need to be put back in line.

Glowgays generally only notice you if you're someone worth noticing ie someone rocking the boat. There's way too much data for them to otherwise process so your cringey text messages are probably safe.

      Citation please.

I could legit believe that maybe stuff going through cloudflare etc.. However, I highly doubt they are able to otherwise.

My understanding of how they operate is that basically all US (and to a lesser extent 5 eyes) internet traffic is in one way or another funneled back to their main processing facility. There the majority of it is stored for a short retention period, and associated metadata is analyzed to determine what is and isn’t worth keeping. Most of the data is not kept for longer than maybe a month, there’s just too much for it to be worthwhile, but traffic flagged as interesting is. The metadata is stored long term though.

Decryption wise, no they cannot just magic private keys out of thin air. So,e encryption methods are flawed, backdoors (the NIST ECC curve for instance), or basic enough to be bruteforced easily, but the primary strategy has been to stockpile encrypted data to be decrypted at a later date when they either manage to get a hold of the keys, or other methods become available to break the encryption.

Even if they could decrypt everything you sent, I’m not sure it’d be of much use. The amount of data they’re dealing with makes it utterly impractical to do much other than keep track of metadata and use it to create a fingerprint of selected individuals. They’re not going to bother keeping track of every normie, there’s no point. They’ll use it to keep an eye on known targets.

Even then, the NSA isn’t able to do much with the information as far as I’m wars, they don’t have any enforcement powers, they have to pass it on to do anything, to the FBI or CIA. As soon as things go interdepartmental in the US everything goes breasts up and they never seem to communicate effectively.

The shit they collect with their dragnet is largely useless in court. Even if it was admissible, they don’t want to reveal their capabilities, so they have to either plant evidence, or gather it the old fashioned way. So if the US government wants you dead, the NSA will be tapped to give them your location, but otherwise I’m not sure how useful it is.

        >The shit they collect with their dragnet is largely useless in court.
But they can still use it to blackmail the shit out of you. Problem #1

        Problem #2

If this were true, wouldn't they have compromised the Bitcoin network, leaving it completely worthless? They have said, including people like Hillary Clinton, that BTC is a threat to the powers that be. To me, it seems like if they can break encryption, they would have exploited BTC to remove all faith in it. Since they have not done that, I believe encryption has not been defeated. Of course, there are tons of ways they could get your keys if you're not practicing proper OPSEC somewhere else in your life.

Put it this way, they can spend budget money employing the worlds best mathematicians teaching in the best universities when they need to. The best of everything in fact. You name an area of science, psychology, mathematics, and all the rest of it and they have access to the best when they need it. Usually their in-house guys are smart enough to deal with anything they are interested in

    No.

The United States intelligence community has coverty infiltrated most of the standardizing bodies and large corporations. Not only do they leverage this to deply backdoors in an implementation level in software, but they also exploit this to standardize weak and back-doored cryptographic protocols.

The most notorious example of this was the Dual_EC_DRBG, a common algorithm used for cryptographic key generation that was proven to contain a kleptographic backdoor, however other examples exist. For instance, the widely-used NIST P-curves are widely suspected by the cryptographic community of being backdoored due to their strange and unexplained parameter choices. This is part of why curve25519 exist as a sort of "open source" alternative where you KNOW why the parameters are what they are and the room left for a backdoor is inpheasibly small.

Matthew Green gave an excellent talk on this a many years back when the Snowden leaks became mainstream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQGkhCPN_KM

The NSA has broken most of the cryptography used in commercial VPNs and similar products. They also have wiretaps on most internet traffic in the world. Covering your ass from the NSA is going to need som seriously thorough OPSEC.
