I didn't touch the timing, but I did have to manually slow down my RAMs speed down to 3000Mhz... MB kept shitting itself with any speed over that, despite it being 3600Mhz RAM (apparently common issue for that board).
Has it gotten any BIOS updates recently? Sometimes they fix shit like that

Eh, honestly haven't bothered to check since having to deal with it a couple years ago. Works well enough as is @ 3000Mhz so I'm not too worried about it.

At least tighten the timings, you get your moneys worth. You should have a bunch of room to make them tighter considering you're running the ram 300MHz lower.
Example, look up a kit from the same make but at 3000MHz and copy those timings.
Yep. If your hardware has drivers for it, it's golden.
Also better than using 32-bit XP with PAE to get more than 4GB of RAM, which does breaks some things.
Plus you get access to 64-bit only software and slightly better overall performance in general.
Don't think I ever encountered a game like that but maybe I did and just forget, I have CFF Explorer installed so changing SubSystem version in a binary file takes seconds.
New hardware only matters if you're playing video games or doing some sort of 3D work. 15+ year old hardware is sufficient for the average user. Don't waste money buying new crap
