How the frick do you guys cope on how centralized the internet has become. Everything is so shitty now there's nothing interesting to do on the internet anymore its all the same few sites. It used to be a bunch of original and interesting separate sites but now if you look something up its either reddit twitter or some shitty big cooperation forum. I'm getting such a crisis from this.

IQfy is a pretty good entry point for these kinds of things. I personally like reading blogs from technical minded folk, once you have a few they link to others that you also can read. Also if you see someone say something based see if they link a blog anywhere.

For you, but what about the zoomers? Zoomers haven't seen our badgers. We have a mountain of memes that we piled upon for decades. It didn't vanish just because of social media.
The truth is the old web was full of creativity and craft. The new web is news. They looked at memes getting viral and they saw TV ratings. Nobody in the internet gets happier learning Israel is fricking shit up again FOR TWO FRICKING DECADES STRAIGHT. Nobody cares. Nobody gives a shit. Show me a cartoon of a dancing raccoon with a hat! But they know this moronic senseless violence gets clicks, upvotes and likes on social media. So this is all they post. Rage bait all the time 24 hours per day 7 days per week. And everyone just falls for it. Wake up, people. They just want to keep you addicted to anger so you can keep giving them ad money. You anger junkie became a toxic cynic. Your irony pushes away every creative being that could bring you joy. You can't just enjoy a nice drawing anymore. You have to compare it to israelites or some shit. You have to tell them anime artists are wage slaves living with their parents until they off themselves and they have no career now that we have AI. You were happier when you were ignorant. Stop being "informed" by the news in your feed be it on Twitter, Reddit or even in IQfy. Life is much more than that.

i've seen the sites zoomers are trying to make
they're small and full of life and have their cliques and quirks, just like we did
for us the internet was new, it was like building a world fair in a virgin grassland field
for them, they build grody enclaves in the quiet alleys and in the corners of the remnants we left as kids
the old internet is alive and well, but like the bell in the polar express, we're too old to hear it
tiktok isn't the internet i grew up with, just like myspace wasn't the internet i grew up with: too many people there
you have to dig deeper to find the personal pages and linktrees and the private discords and the <1000 user social sites and all the other things
it's still there, it's just that the water level on the iceberg raises every year

lots of old mmos were social apps, i met real friends that i met irl in them, there really wasn't much to do in them besides hang out, play the game how you wanted, and meet people, since data mining wasn't really a thing and no one was streaming/making money on video games, so there was no reason to sweat
i'm not 40, but i've been on this site basically since the beginning, including when i was underage b&

this isn't my only source of social contact
not browsing /b/ /misc/ and the porn boards was just something i never really did anyway
            filtering also helps
the only place i can still just say whatever i want
plus, i have more of a positive outlook on things in general
yeah, this place is different, but it still has charm to it, and it's not really that different from what it used to be (assuming you filter low quality bait)
ffs i met several gfs on IQfy and /soc/, and they were decent people and not crazy
so i give back while i can, before the bots truly take over and we truly can't discern a real post from a fake post (it's already happening, but there's still ways of telling if you've been here long enough)
i give (you)'s to decent posts, i laugh at occasional funny, in-the-moment jokes, i get in screencaps, and then go about my day
i have more responsibilities as a grown ass man, but i still make time to shitpost
i like zoomers and feel for their struggles - i see a younger me in them up against some of the same issues i went up against, but in a different context or at a higher difficulty
met some really smart ones, they'll be the ones leading the AI and robotics front eventually
idk they'll be fine, and if you're one, you'll be fine - you learn as you go
i got a decent wfh job that i do my best at, got some pets, got some hobbies outside of here
best thing about my 30's is i've learned to not take life so fricking seriously

cohost seems neat, but i feel too old to use it - it's like a micro twitter/tumblr clone without tracking and ads
            there's also plenty of altchans
again, private discords are decent too, but i have my own gripes with discord
you need to be okay with "the trannies" though - i don't trust doctors that sell life-altering surgery for zero physiological health benefit for what is otherwise a mental health problem as much as the next guy, but we had our fair share of deviants and weirdos back in the day (they're people too), and you have to be okay with people making their own life choices, especially if you want to engage with others in these spaces
have your own opinions and stick to your damn guns, but don't be a dick and especially don't cast pearls before swine (eg "don't debate or convince people that will obviously refuse to listen or engage you in bad faith")
some people i know are furgays and gays - as long as they're not trying to involve me in anything illegal and not forcing an agenda down my throat (most of the time, they can't, because i ultimately decide what i believe and can't force someone to agree with me), it's their life, not mine
besides, i enjoy the occasional discussion about things i don't agree with or things i'm not aware of

            what this guy said
also, we tried decentralized social networks before, they don't work because they add too much friction to the network effect - people need to build their proverbial baseball fields and bring people in around a common topic or goal, which ultimately necessitates some level of centralization
even independent mumble servers are better, but the infra needs to be easy to maintain and trusted, smart people need to keep it running
everyone loves talking about decentralized everything, but no one talks about centralized tier 1 networks are now
having a social network for the sake of "being connected" is what got us into this crap timeline to begin with

This is a good point. The human mind is designed to be connected with, that is also the danger of echo chambers like facebook turning itself into a walled garden for boomer politicos. Algorithms really separated society and boxed us into consumer garbage instead of uniting us. However people have to want to be united or understand each other first.

Start by getting a Gemini browser.
        Their website shows many options.
Since protocol is mostly text based, there is no issues with that.
        I use that: https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/
When you download, just open it and then you are in as any normal browser.
The network has its own search engines
        I use gemini://geminispace.info/search
I think you are good to go from this. Ask if you have more questions, given i dont know everything.

It would be funny if all those licenses suddenly changed to some license that requires the users to have the same license or something idk its not likely. But if open source dies then commercial use dies. I can try to avoid it as much as possible but limited usage I do have with these shitapps to communicate with boomers.
Something that would be cool and I can actually see happening is a law that makes you choose your operating system more when buying a new device which would absolutely destroy windows.

its trivial to host an imageboard almost anonymously, the main issue is funding and moderation
funding can be done through a pass system (maybe give pass users API access or something)
for moderation you will have to either do it yourself or sort through the human filth of jannies to find a decent one
its a headache but it can be done by a single person if the operation is small enough.

If anyone can help us out of this miserable it's (You). Maybe a few more (You), but you're already nostalgia-gagging so remember how (You) gave no shits about societal norms, the memes you helped shape, the culture you brought. We need to literally do it ourselves. I said it once already, share your projects here and pay no mind to the shittalking. If it's any good, people will use it. This is our only way out. Big money will always sell you out. Do as anon said and pump out those based Websites you so desperately crave.

this too. People like OP are part of the problem: the internet is is now mostly passive consumers and not active creators. Thus the people who do create (tiktok prostitutes and JRE clones) shape the image people have of what's out there.

This is certainly a thing happening, but not as bad as the people who complain about it make out. There are lots of small sites and forums still out there for various topics and projects.
People like OP just have no idea what they want to do and they take out not being able to randomly come across something that will interest them on big corporations working against them.

I has been this way for a very long time now.
The best thing I have found is to simply look for new undeground things and web-surf in the way we used too back in the day.
Cool people who make independent stuff also tend to share other cool things they have found, just don't expect it to be a constant feed like you are used to.
If you find a cool site add it to your bookmarks and see if is has an RSS feed to put into your reader. Eventually you will have a lot of cool places to check in on.
Also make something of your own, even if it is just a small blog or personal site, be the change you want to see.

Through the Internet you can gain access to more books than you'll ever read in a life time; audio books to learn from the time you wake to the time you sleep; free lectures made available from the best universities in the world; scientific journals that allow you to be on the absolute limit of human knowledge. You have access to a personal computer that's more powerful than the computer used to put man on the moon. In fact -- your mobile phone is more powerful than that dinosaur.

The problem isn't that centralized sites are the only landmass for online exploration. The problem is that OP is a massive homosexual who has no interests and hence no map can be made that suites his lack of exploration. A 'walled garden' like Facebook is therefore perfect for the OP, since it will spoon feed him topics to explorer. Whereas if he had any interests he would be forced to search for relevant resources, ask his own questions, do original resource, and use the Internet for more than furry.

I've been dealing with a lot of grief that boils down to "things aren't the same as they have been in the past". I think it's a natural part of getting older. I cope with it by realizing none of it is mine. The internet is not mine. The people on it are not mine. My computer is not truly mine nor the software that it runs. The air I breathe is not mine. I'm a traveler passing through a narrow passage of time and before long I will be gone as well. Things aren't ever going to back to the way they were and they're not going to get any better. Just be thankful you were here for the good times but stay grounded in today and remember that tomorrow isn't even promised to you.

the best content on the current web that can be easily found is archive.org. its got all sorts of anime, movies, magazine scans, etc. I was reading Electronic Gaming Monthly and watching Macross Plus a while back on there. There's a noticeable decrease in the quality of media since web 2.0 and revenue sharing because everyone figured out the meta is vanilla content + bot engagement.

You make vanilla shit content, and then you bot a million views and then you get some number of organic views and also google pays out for the bot views because whatever they probably sell the bots or something right. In any case, because the engagement is mostly fake and otherwise designed for lowest common denominator data science backed content for actual morons -- all the good stuff is now on archive.org. If archive goes down you might as well burn the Internet and start over.

These days I use the internet to people watch in a manner of pseaking. Weirdos everywhere. It's paradoxical because the old internet was for the oddballs and the outcasts of society. Some how those people were more normal than whatever the hell is going now.

Nah not really, it's just that being a oddball and an outcast is cool now so people seek being oddballs and outcasts in very artificial ways usually concerning idpol. I'd argue the oddballs and outcasts of the old internet were nothing of the sort, they just had very particular interests to whom they couldn't speak to many about but were otherwise perfectly adjusted people, modern "outcasts" are just the most vapid of normies desperate to be special in the way they think smart people are in a kind of "only the people crazy enough to think they can change the world, do" way.
