How would you rank his novels? I've only read No Country and Blood Meridian and I'm curious to hear IQfy's opinion on the rest of his catalogue

Who?
The Road is pretty good, Anon.
My personal opinion:
1. Outer Dark
2. Blood Meridian
3. The Crossing
4. The Road
5. Child of God
6. All the Pretty Horses
7. No Country for Old Men
Objective list:
1. Blood Meridian
2. The Crossing
3. Outer Dark
4. Child of God
5. The Road
6. All the Pretty Horses
7. No Country for Old Men
I haven't read the others but Suttree is supposed to be one of his best books
Nice, I was actually thinking of picking up Outer Dark next
Objectively, I would rank them;
-Blood Meridian
-Suttree
-The Road
-The Crossing
-Outer Dark
-All the Pretty Horses
-The Orchardkeeper
-No Country for Old Men
-Child of God
-Cities on the Plain
I think they’re all masterpieces, though.
Respectable lists anon. Outer Dark is under appreciated.
Good:
Suttree, Child of God, Outer Dark, The Crossing, The Road,
Worth a read:
Blood Meridian, Cities of the Plain, All The Pretty Horses
Skip:
No Country for Old Men, The Orchard Keeper, all the screenplays
Suttree is my favourite of his. All his mainline books are worth a shot honestly, but Suttree, it's something special.
I take it the plotlessness of Suttree doesn't hinder the experience then? I'm a bit intimidated by the size of that book given I've heard it's a semi-autobiographical book
No no, not at all. There's still plenty happening. It's sort of episodic, characters come and go, Suttree himself gets into various jobs and scrapes. It's funny but also bitterly sad at times. The book does resolve too, it's not like some sitcom or something, everything that happens eventually informs the end.
yup
i hear no country for old men and The Road are good. The movies are great but i have yet to read the books
No Country For Men movie is better than the book, if for no other reason than it being a perfect movie. McCarthy also originally wrote it as a script, before deciding to turn it into novel instead.
I disagree, the movie doesn't make much sense since they cut out the girl and her conversation with Llewelyn and the Sheriff's monologues
>"I have yet to read the book"
IQfy in seven words. Also, Suttree is best.
1 & 1: Blood Meridian & Suttree
2: AtPH
3. The Crossing
4. CoG
5. Cities on the plain
The conclusion of Cities on the plain is great though
blood meridian
suttree
the crossing
all the pretty horses
no country for old men
outer dark
the orchard keeper
the road
child of god
cities of the plain
furthermore, no country for old men would universally rank higher in everyone's lists (except mine) if they had not already seen the movie of it, which is such a good film that it sapped their enthusiasm for the book
1. The Border Trilogy
1.a The Crossing
1.b Cities of the Plain
1.c All the Pretty Horses
2. Blood Meridian
3. Suttree
4. No Country for Old Men
5. Outer Dark
6. The Road
7. The Orchard Keeper
8. Child of God
Cities of the Plain is a plebfilter of the highest proportions
>Cities of the Plain is a plebfilter of the highest proportions
Go on. I felt the falling-for-a-hooker storyline was cliched, he's rarely so obvious and predictable. The climatic knife fight is cringe as hell, reminded me of Sharpe's Sword.
It's funny that the racial message of Suttree is that black people are weird looking and spooky but good guys while white people are insane antisocial morons
i think this is something you are straining to see more than something actually in the work
>black people are weird looking and spooky but good guys while white people are insane antisocial morons
so fricking true lmao
Blood Meridian
Outer Dark
Suttree
The Road
The Crossing
All the Pretty Horses
No Country for Old Men
The Orchard Keeper
Child of God
