I was about to write so much at my last job. New role has me way less available. Going on a trip to Utah soon to work on the setting

    What is the point?
I am not a nepobaby nor a token minority. How can I get it published? Wasting my own money on self publishing? - yeag, wasting, because no one reads anymore
Which leads to the second point, theres no educated public anymore. Until the 80s, or, being optimistic, the 2000s (and thats tretching it), one could write assuming a (small, but existing) group of educated and intelligent readers. And now? College education and public opinion have been, after a long process, completely subverted, new money doesnt care for high culture and old money cant keep the entropy of the rebelling youth in check in an age without standards and without the last renmants of aristocratic feeling
Who is my public then? Should I write slop that sells or should I write for a bunch of image board virgins who dont even read books and want to be writers too?
And if anyone tries to tell me to write for my friends, I can only ask: are you fuking stupid? People dont read a short story you wrote even if they were the ones that showed interest and asked to see it. A novel? Haha
And if, as a last resort, you ask me why dont I write for myself, I ask you back: why? Really, why? So my children, when I die, may keep my writings for some month out of a vague sense of duty until they finally decide to throw it in the trash, with a sigh of relief and a though of "there goes dads silly ramblings"?
That being said, the novel is doing great, thanks for asking

I wrote almost 2000 words tonight. The fourth book in the story is almost done, I'm on the penultimate chapter/story.

It's lacking in all artistic merit, genuine emotion, or even the semblance of a theme, but going alright otherwise.

My next novel comes out next month. Been mostly working on short stories since I finished it to get some advertising with. That is mostly done, one has been accepted and hopefully a few more will as well. Have some ideas for the next novel but have yet to commit to anything, previous novel will not really feel done until the release happens which makes it difficult to start in on the next.

I finished my first novel. It took about 6 years and 5/6 top to bottom rewrites, but I think it's finally in a good place. I don't think I'll be published but I'm glad I did I have the monkey off my back. I'm now working on my next one.

Writing creatively used to be a dream of mine when I was young but it's not any longer for several reasons, many of which have already been said in this thread. I would never write a novel until I myself am reading new novels by contemporary authors (no point in writing something that I wouldn't actually read myself) and I'm never going to do that until I've finished reading the Western canon, which may be... never. So my dream now instead is to write academically, since I will be forced to do that if I want to pursue a career in academia that will allow me to spend my time reading the canon, and hopefully I can write in a creative way. I think there's a space for this kind of writing -- even for creative academic writing to be read by people outside your field if you're lucky like Nick Land -- not to mention that this kind of analytic writing aligns better with what I've shown success in anyway. The major drawback of this of course is having to deal with academia but that's a different story.

    Gave up on it.

Now I am writing pulp stories and having a lot more fun. The stories are more focused, punchy, and the pace is kept high so there is something always happening.
Plus since the stories are MUCH shorter I can actually get feedback quickly and often so I can make more progress improving my overall skill level in writing and editing.
I also don't get tired of working on the same idea for months until all my passion for it fades.

Second thing is I am now using structured written down outlines and a rough formula for the stories. That way I juggle less stuff in my head, plus I have notes to look up for shit like exactly how to spell every single character name so I don't have to look several chapters back to double check. It's all on one reference sheet. Very handy.

So while I quit the novel I was working on, I think it is for the better overall.
I will almost certainly recycle many ideas from it in other stories though. So even the work I already put in isn't for nothing.

I have 4 manuscripts for different novels. I cannot get the necessary edits done so I am just going to quit my job and focus on them. I've got years worth of savings to live on. I'm finishing these as much as possible before I get back into the cage. And if I ever turn a profit with the books I will never have a career other than writing.

Stalled until I work a few themes together, I need a subtext that runs deeper than "they're somewhat homogay" because that bores me on its own.

My biggest mental hurdle is my imagination, I have no idea how to write enough to fill a whole book, I just don't get it.
