KJVgays scream and shit themselves because for some reason a book in 1611 happened to get everything right. It was the will of the force or something. Even though there’s nothing biblical to support this notion, it’s just an extra layer of faith based reasoning.

KJV trannies have mind broken IQfy, all commonly available biblical translations are fine but:
1. KJV is the worst one in terms of access to the original textual sources,
2. KJV is the worst one in terms of fidelity to meaning of original sources, and this is to a degree purposeful,
3. KJV is the worst one in terms of comprehensibility, because the use of language is so different from modern English that even the well translated parts can be misunderstood because nobody knows eg that Thou is actually informal.
In general none of these problems are particularly important and I will admit that KJV does sound pretty metal, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Also NKJV is pretty obscure so it may in fact be garbage, in which case KJV would be a big step up. But you are probably best off just buying the Bible your church uses, unless you are Mormon or Unitarian or something in which case God help you.
NKJV uses the same textual sources as the KJV but is in modern English. It's not terrible but I think it's a totally useless translation because it doesn't use the more ancient textual sources that became available after the KJV but isn't in the KJV's cool Jacobean English.

It's fine. If you imagine yourself ever learning the base languages then you should use a more literal translation. ESV is quite popular for that so it's a decent option.
honestly i wish i got a NKJV
i didn't have much of a problem with the KJV gospels but going back and reading OT books like the book of job, i find it to be unnecessarily difficult to understand. getting a KJV was a mistake and perhaps even an act of vanity on my part

I have the NOAB and I love it, but he probably doesn't want a 2500 page annotated Bible. You can get an NIV for basically nothing anywhere, and it's perfectly fine. Don't get into bible translation autism, it's a step below making your own anime dubs.
why would he want a bible written by skeptical scholars steering you with their bias in the prologues and essays? i've read a bit of the noab and norton criticals and they cry anti semitism so much. the norton even has a footnote of jesus "probably sarcastic" when he says you can do anything through faith.

I vastly prefer the NRSV. It's in modern English, a team from Oxford assembled it from several different sources, they explain the context and background of everything, it's cross-referenced heavily, and it's free on archive.org. What more could you possibly want?

Get a real (Catholic) Bible
RSV: CE is good and easy to read, you could also get a Douay-Rheims if you want older English
ESV is fine
