        >Only really supported on the web.
Yes, that's literally the point of this format, it's even in the fricking name.
Next you're telling me .DNG is shit because it's only supported by photography softwares?
        >Represents the cloud mantra
        What

    me too it's literal cancer
best thing you could do is install a userscript that tells it to frick off

  6. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Beyond just being annoying, I see it forced and applied to images that were originally jpegs so it's another layer of compression added to a lossy source.

At the beginning of this cancerous webp transition you could still quite often fish out the original jpg somehow by either manually saving the image or changing the url, but that works less and less these days. The like total dogshit quality of this format when it is forced upon jpg files is embarrassing, so many of these images that have been force converted look fricking awful now

he didn't even say that. look at how google is marketing it.
        https://developers.google.com/speed/webp
its not the softwares fault, but theres a correlation between moronic webhosts and using webp because its marketed as this magic solution that saves hosts money

        >ffmpeg -i image.webp image.png
Do people don't know you can just do this? Or open image in any image editing software and save it as a png/jpg?

you are the same moron who thinks you can just convert a 96 kbps mp3 to lossless flac by using a converter. yeah it will be a 'png', yes it will retain all the lossy data that having gone through 5 different lossy formats brings and look like shit

most websites will serve you png or jpg when you disable the webp support in the browser

        not anymore, see

On my sites I only serve webp now, I don't care about the accept header and I don't provide any fallback for dinosaur browsers

    FRICK WEBP
Still doesnt open in fricking photoshop

The problem is you're trying to open a file format intended to be displayed on the web (and not intended to be edited) into a image editing software that works better with source, lossless images.

This is a one of the most fricking moronic arguments I've ever heard. Second only to GIMP apologists saying "Some people prefer working without adjustment layers"

WebP does fricking open in the fricking Photoshop.

Read the fricking https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/support-webp-image-format.html for frick's sake!

Upgrade to the fricking version 23.2 or at least install the fricking recommended plugin.

i hate it because they are worse than the jpgs that they were converted from. its not a native format anywhere and you just know that they converted the old jpgs

It's actually one of the best formats out there. It's just that is badly supported.

Compression ratio is far more important over the web than Encoding/Decoding time
Hence that bench actually shows JPEG XL is the best

yeah not shit, and where the frick is JPEG XL supported?

You only hate it because IQfy doesn't support it

  14. 2 years ago

if IQfy adopted webp i would have no problem with it whatsoever. it doesn't seem inherently bad, i love webms for example and i know they are similar technologies just ones the image equivalent. very likely its better than jpg which i actually dislike
AND YET IQfy DOESN'T SUPPORT IT
i have to click on 10 different sites even with webp blocker addons just to find one that isn't in webp format now. is there some sort of licensing fee that IQfy would have to pay to implement .webp or something
