I have never read any fantasy or sci fi book in my life. The closest I've ever got is 1984 or Brave New World.

If you had to give a rec for each, what would it be?

Some of the stuff I've recently finished:
      >Mishima- Sound of Waves, Confessions of a Mask
      >Gabe Habash- Stephen Florida
      >Alfred Lansing- Endurance
      >Michael Crichton- State of Fear
      >Joe Hill- Heart Shaped Box
      >Michael Azzerad- Come as You Are
      >Elie Wiesel- Night
      >James Williams- Stand Out of Our Light
Kind of whatever, I don't really have a niche yet besides Mishima

Try Ice by Anna Kavan for scifi, it has the thematic ambiguity of Mishima but many would not call it scifi and is not pure genre. Perhaps Necromancer or A Scanner Darkly if you want to get closer to scifi proper. For fantasy I suspect you will be better off with magical realism, start with Pedro Paramo.

Fantasy is about the propagation of mythic tropes. So why not read the actual myths: the Iliad, Odyssey, Aenid etc.
Sci-fi is about ideas. So read books that grapple with the biggest ones: Dune, or The Book of the New Sun.

the hobbit is a kiddie book but lord of the rings is much better. give fellowship a try and if you're not into it then that's fine, at least you tried.

Space opera with weird aliens but also kind of hard sci fi. It's part of a series, but you can read the first one as a standalone. I also like Cherryh's Foreigner series, but with that one if you read book one you're kind of committed to at least the first three books.

For fantasy, Lord of the Rings
    For sci-fi, Hyperion and/or Dune
For both, Book of the New Sun
Voilà, that's all you need to read to experience the best of both genres
