How do you lose a crt to brittle plastic, sure it wont look as nice with cracks but the internerls themself should be unaffected right?
The chassis had basically completely broken down, in this picture it's still relatively intact but held togheter with tape. Later nothing would stay in place, not even the leg. Only pieces left was the internal metal chassis, and at that point I decided to let it rest in pieces.
It was already quite burned out (1996 monitor), and being a 17" 85khz it wasn't a big loss. Had the NEC already too.
I wouldn really care about that aslong as its still bright enough to use hope you gave it away instead of trashing it
I kinda care about the aesthethics of my CRTs. Also I wasn't even using it since I had the 22" NEC.
It did get bright enough with G2 adjustments but the tube was just tired. It couldn't handle above 70mhz and the phosphors were really dirty looking.
The monitor I see nightmares about now is this gorgeous 20" barrel Trinitron with very little use on it. Thankfully the monitor still feels super solid, nothing to really worry about.

Anon, it was lucky to live its last years with me. It required a whole lot of expertise and tinkering to make any use of, for example it was only usable with interlaced modes due to the bandwidth issues. And it didn't accept just any interlaced modeline either, took me quite a while to figure out what it likes. Learned quite a bit about these things thanks to it really.
It was actually getting dangerous to handle or keep around too. Anyone else would have trashed it a long time ago.

This is conjecture, but for overall lifetime of a CRT, short power cycling is probably pretty bad. I've read anecdotes about valve tubes lasting twice or thrice as long if they weren't subjected to cycling, It's probable the same applies to CRTs.
Another bit of supporting evidence is that anon with the soon-80k iiyama, he never cycles his CRT. Though I guess he blanks the screen while not in use.
I'm not telling you to keep your CRT on 24/7, that's dumb. Get a disposable LCD.
On the other hand that appears to be just another cheap 19", so it's not really that big of a deal if you keep using it like that.
