I installed KDE plasma and it's borderline unusable with how much it lags on my 4070. Are there any actual desktop environments that don't lag like shit on nvidia cards, or should I just stop trying?

lemme guess you can't use windows because of your severe autism and/or autogynephilia?
>nvidia
what session? transland or X11?
nvidia on X11 + disabled compositor is very nice
X11, obviously, since wayland doesn't even work with nvidia. I will try disabling it.
I use windows, but I miss bash.
nvidia doesn't work with wayland*
Those statements are equivalent.
I used picom in my last build and it would randomly freeze sometimes (mostly during inactivity). It was unusable if I want to be on the couch watching some youtube video and then have to get up to fix it. Also occasionally happened during gaming.
Also why would you have no issues if its a problem with the drivers?
i had the exact same problem with screen just freezing when i was in fullscreen. i think when i changed something in the config file it fixed it but i cant seem to remember it but its probably changing picom's backend renderer. i dont think its a problem with drivers but how shit show of linux desktop is. these motherfrickers still cant do shit without splitting one project into 23 different projects. if i were you i would go back to windows like i did and never look back.
I like linux though, it has really good software if you don't mind bash (which I don't, I fricking love it), and it's fun to hack. Meanwhile windows is in the process of transfering everything to be a shitty electron javascript app built on top of .net, which I really deeply dislike. I like knowing everything about my system as well, which is kind of ruined by something like a desktop environment for the most part, which is why I don't like them very much as well.
I just flip flop between the two, and I've made peace with that.
>Those statements are equivalent.
One blames wayland, the other blames nvidia.
I never said it was wayland's fault. I wasn't blaming anything. The whole nvidia trash is very unfortunate, but there are no real alternatives to nvidia if you want to do intensive GPU work.
It is Waylands fault
Nvidea should work with wayland. This is 2017 anymore.
Wayland does work on nvidia with drm call environment variable... Which means you want a Radeon card for the time being.
>but I miss bash.
Use WSL then
What does WSL have to do with bash? The reason why bash is good is that it is very easy to integrate with other programs. Powershell is actual cancer to use as a shell.
In fact, this is the main problem I have with windows: everything is way too complicated for me, and on top of that, it constantly changes, so you can't even learn stuff.
I'm not an AI bro, I use CUDA for rendering. HPC is used for a lot of shit.
Even if I were, how is that relevant to the discussion at all?
So stop using nvidia for the display moron, you have another gpu sitting in your processor unless you went with a non G amd cpu.
I don't have integrated graphics.
Cope, then.
wsl is bloat. windows has a native bash shell hidden inside of windows git.if you have git, you have a bash exe is at "C:Program FilesGitbinbash.exe". you can use that path in any terminal.
you can work with bash on windows almost like linux
some anon was gracious enough to mention it (archive link: https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/100004060/#100004060)
>everything is way too complicated for me, and on top of that, it constantly changes, so you can't even learn stuff.
like what?
>njudea
even intel arc performs better than that piece of shit
still shits its pants on kde, unless you use >gnome
with my gtx1050, i never had lag issues on kde. you might wanna try xfce + picom or mate.
i use dwm cause frick it all
I used dwm for a couple of years with picom, and I really enjoyed it because of how simple it was. I've reached the conclusion that most of the issues I experience with Linux (98%+) are caused by desktop managers. Unfortunately I think tiling WMs are fundamentally trash, but there don't seem to be any real floating WM options that aren't hopelessly outdated or just outright complete trash.
What constitutes an out of date wm? What does a current wm do that is necessary? Use more ram? I use jwm and it's sleek as a kitty cat,
>What constitutes an out of date wm?
Typically one which doesn't comform well to modern X11 conventions. Stuff like tray icons, notifications etc which aren't explicitly defined in the ICCCM. I remember I tried IceWM and couldn't for the life of me find a way to get proper application icons working. I'll try JWM, I'm installing my system from scratch anyway to purge it from KDE plasma, so might as well.
Plasma & gnome are both incredibly bloated. Try out some floating window managers and see if you like any. Openbox + tint2 is really good.
Running i3 x11 no compositor on a gsync 144hz monitor and native nvidia drivers flawlessly. The problem is wayland. I ran picom a little but it was a pain to configure to toggle off for games. I have 2-3 splits with i3. Left is firefox with vertical tabs. Right is a stack of emacs and terminals.
maybe stop buying nvidia products
Yea pay more for less because wayland devs are incompetent makes sense.
works fine on my amd machine, seems like a problem nvidia created
There is only issue with Wayland, nvidia works fine with X11. Fricking every ting works fine with nvidia except moronic Wayland.
everything*
wayland works perfectly on my amd and intel systems, nvidia seems to be the only problem... coincidentally, nvidia is also the one that requires a proprietary driver, and has the worst open source driver of the 3, go figure
>Fricking every ting works fine with nvidia except moronic Wayland.
Works on my machine
There is no alternative to Nvidia, as I already have stated.
Apparently not, since I'm having problems with KDE Plasma, which is (correct me if I'm wrong) a pretty popular DE.
I don't think it's a (me) problem based on the fact this is a fresh install of arch.
>"There is no alternative to Nvidia"
idk what mental illness you're speaking out of there, I have never purchased an nvidia product
Do you even LLM? Or all you do is play games and watch twitch? Rocm is still shit.
should've guessed that OP was an AI bro, there's no hope for you, just have a nice day and save everyone a bit of oxygen
Why are you even on this board, clown moron?
>nooooo why are you not into the heckin latest scam fad of technology leave this board noowwwwwwwwwwww
>PC is for playing the latest pozslop aimed at broccoli heads
Either way, you are probably just coping after buying AMD.
so maybe use your shit nvidia gpu... for the AI... and not for the display? just use intel integrated for the display dumbass
Read the thread. AMD has been trying to get a share of the CUDA market for a decade now, and simply put it isn't going well. Maybe their new ROCm stuff turns out to be good (I hope and pray this is the case), but so far there is no real CUDA alternative for HPC.
my fresh install of arch 2 weeks ago was fine THOUGH
maybe stop buying the latest heckin nvidia product
Ok, what DE did you use, and were you using a compositor? My PC isn't special and neither is yours. What drivers are you using, and how old is your card?
I have 2 Nvidia cards I've tried to install KDE Plasma on, a 6 yo old, and my 4070. Both have the exact same issues between them. This is simply not a (me) problem, and I'm a little skeptical that it is an nvidia problem, since I've used Picom in the past, and outside of the random freezing which happened every 10-20 minutes or so it worked flawlessly performance wise.
Why is it that Picom can do it but KDE plasma can't? Why are all these Desktop environments always so absolute ass?
>works on amd, intel, and nvidia with nouveau
>nooo it's not nvidia's fault!
Answer the question. Why is it that Picom can do it but KDE plasma can't?
why is it that everyone else can do it and not nvidia?
kde6 x11 compositor off 550 nvidia proprietary driver 3060gtx
Compositor off is always going to work fine.
compositor on works just as fine as well for me
i just dont like it
Don't believe you.
I know about git bash, and I know about cygwin. Just doesn't feel the same, I don't know.
not git bash the terminal and not the Cygwin libraries
Once you install git you have bash hidden behind git bash
you can put that bash in any terminal of your choosing like wezterm or alacrity
you could run any windows program or gnu util in bash
what else are you looking for?
xfce running great here on nvidia 4060TI, 4 displays debian stable with nvidia drivers from the repo, even got cuda running stable
do you have monitors with different DPIs? How is that working for you? if well, i'll switch to what you're using
Can't tell you from the top of my brain what display has what dpi, but I can tell you all 4 are different brands and size: I run 2 tv's and 2 monitors. monitors are on my desk, and right next to it are my two tv's that I watch from the sofa (in fact I'm typing this on my biggest tv from the sofa)
monitors are acer's 1 is 24' 144hz (but I run it at 60) other is 27'
tv's are samsung 37' and a no brand 32'
fricking works, I'm running llm's, stable diffusion and 4 screens, I even used to game on the 24' back when I still had a 3060
this kind of reply only concerns me that if there is some kind of scaling problem from using displays with different DPI (you almost certainly are) that you would not notice it
sound like a (You) problem
Works on my machine (AMD)
as soon as I see someone try to cast a negative inference on the word "bro", I know they are a troony. that men are in a metaphorical brotherhood with one another, defending each other's interests and wishing each other well is something that is only good for us, and frankly, the world. if someone is using AI I would hope that they are an "AI-bro" and not an "AI-genderless-and-isolated clown individual" or whatever the frick you think would be better. have a nice day.
sincerely, a bro
you forgot to reply dumbass
you saw it anyway. YWNBAW
xfce
all roads lead to GNOME.
Cinnamon
From what I've heard kde is infamous for not working with Nvidia. Linux mint cinnamon is pretty nice, although I'm using a 10 year old Nvidia card so take that with a grain of salt
Absolutely nothing on Linux works properly. I don't understand it. Trying to do anything is a fight in futility. Have a multi-part rar? good luck getting the files out of it. Dare to use a bluetooth switch pro controller on yuzu or suyu? HA it wont work. Bluetooth audio cuts out. Streamdecks will hang the OS and freeze causing a kernel panic if you dare to load a multi command macro.
More to FOSS software, OBS will lower the local quality of whatever game you are running to 1080p, and make the audio sound like total ass. Blender just sucks for making a 3d cad stl file.
>just switch to Linux bro!
>it's better than Windows
b***h please, Windows just works, disabling the spyware is as easy as downloading one of a hundred free utilities and running it. System updates, run it again once in a while and life is fine. Meanwhile Linux chokes on doing anything more than running a fricking web browser. Lags on nvidia? BLAME NVIDIA! No b***h, Linux is just hot garbage, does the same shit on AMD gpus.
>AMD Radeon 7950xtx
eat my ass, Linux is fricking trash if you do ANYTHING on your PC.
poor bait
oh more of these
>bait
>filtered
b***h please, Linux sucks more wiener than I do.
works on my machine ^w^
you wouldn't know what working was if I worked your tight little butthole, Linux is hot garbage b***h.
oh please do OwO
xfce works on my nvidia machines
the reason why you're having issues with KDE is because you're likely using the gayland session
>I installed KDE plasma and it's borderline unusable with how much it lags
Linux is not a desktop OS. Just accept that. Windows 10 LTSC is what you ought to be using.
just use lxqt m8
LXQT
it will turn the most absolute dogshit terrible laptop into a speed demon
Debian+xfce4 is the meta. I never really trusted linux gaming so I run it inside a VM.
I switched to AMD because of KDE.
hey, that rhymes!
all Linux DE's are trash, I use i3 with a few utility programs and that's it.
Maybe Cosmic will be good, the system76 people seem like they actually care about making a good desktop.
this dude uses an emoticon as an interface !?!?!?!
>i3
look its a winking cat
cards
>> KDE
X11:
multi display stopped working
nobody gives a shit anymore because we are wayland now
have to conjure dark magicks just to enable a second monitor every single time
wayland:
the never ending nvidia dumpster fire
>It works for me! (TM)
>just one more patchset to fix nvidia problems, trust us bro
>pins cpu at 100% because they do full screen copies for some moronic reason it's the only way to get multi monitor with nvidia something
The absolute state of open sorce. If they were first year CS students they'd be failed and banned from school for such shit quality software.
The frickin ass pain, I tell you what.
