I just got a job at Google and they gave me a new laptop for work. It's a Chromebook with an Intel Celeron, 4GB RAM and 32GB storage. My manager said this is the standard dev machine and is more than enough for coding. Is this really all I need? Seems kind of underpowered to me. Should I ask for a MacBook Pro instead? I want to make a good impression in my first week.

    they are testing you.
if you can code on that piece of shit you can code on anything, begging for a $2000 mac on your first week is a massive no no

You are probably right. I'll code on the shitbox Chromebook to prove myself like a good wage cuckie.

you're LARPing. I'd gotten a better laptop (and a Thinkpad model too) from a no name startup when I had my first internship in 2013.

From my vague knowledge of the goog, most of the builds are done distributed and a lot of them use in-browser vs code or some shit. Just install vim or eMacs (or use a pre-setup one with auto completion shit pre-configured) and be on your way.

In my job all the development is remote over ssh so I could probably get away with that. Except it will be fricking slow just to load the multitude of dumb web apps required for work.

It's a new state of the art model they've been rolling out in my discord. Neat tech, isn't it? I don't have permission to share it here though.

    Depends what you're coding
It would be fine for a webshitter or scriptkiddy

      >or scriptkiddy
It's should be fine, if you can handle slowest python shit, that lags even on modern PC on a fricking 4gb ram calculator

Do you get to ssh into an actual computer? If not, I don't see the problem.

    Did you
    - declare your pronouns
    - make sure everybody is aware of your dietary restrictions
    - make SURE the coffee is free trade, humanely sourced
    - stage a sit-in for $cause
That seems like par for the course for first week at GOOG

if only every developer on the planet was forced to use a machine like that for software development. then we might actually have decent software that uses resources reponsibly instead of the shit we suffer now.

    >Seems kind of underpowered to me

Because you SHOULD NOT BE DOING PRODUCTION WORK OR YOUR JOB ON A LAPTOP THAT CAN BREAK.

celeron+4GB+32Gb is more than enough for you to open RDP/Terminal sessions/Citrix VDI and App's, all things that are hosted security in their datacenter. Why would they want you to work on a laptop locally when they have an ultra powerful, secure, and backed up environment you should store your work in.

If you can't do your work via a terminal like this, you are really shitty.
