>I love to coomptemplate.

>I love to coomptemplate. Yup, nothing is better, this is my reason for being alive.
>Get a job? Get a GF? Nope, too busy coomtumplating.
>Just going to read all these Neoplatonic tomes and Saints and coomptemplate the day away.
>Making money? But coomtemplation is free!
>Hungry? That's ok, fasting helps me coomptemplate the divine essence.
>Hey guys, want to run off into the wilderness and build a single large building where we all live in literal cells and coomptemplate together eight times a day? Nothing like Mass 365 days a year, it's a good time to coomptemplate!
>Taking a break from coomtumplation? Time to read what Aquinas and Eckhart say about coomptemplating!

It's an addiction. These guys literally end up penniless, homeless, virgins. The jury that sentenced Socrates for corrupting the youth did nothing wrong.

Why do some societies end up having monasticism and some don't, that's the real question. Obviously in Protestant countries they suppressed it after the Reformation, and in Muslim countries it's simply a matter of whether they're willing to tolerate Sufism or not, whether they think it's an innovation.

What was that Socrates said about gadflies? If it wasn't him Athens would find another one?

I don't really get what the point of suppressing contemplative orders was. They didn't even do anything outside of giving people a free place for retreats and room and board if they needed it.

I guess is was about seizing the property for the princes? Still, it seems really hard to justify tearing a bunch of contemplatives out of their cells to take their stuff and melt down the altar gold, especially if you also let your soldiers rape the nuns as sometimes happened.

It seems downright anti-religious. I guess they were upset that community members might go to them for guidance, especially early on when princes wanted the right to pick all the bishops and clergy and control religious doctrine?

Obviously it was done to simply to weaken the institution the orders were sponsored by
For example, in England, the seizing of the monastic estates were done mainly to crush the influences of the Catholic Church in the lands, and the Church of England never bothered to set some up in the homeland because unlike the Early Church there wasn't any land in need of development, or need for a waystation for missionaries

Of course the real question is why not accept them switching over to Anglicanism. Why not have Anglican versions of every Catholic order and only suppress those who wouldn't accept the Acts of Supremacy? This can't be for theological reasons since

            >This can't be for theological reasons since
It actually was, reformists decided the Anglican Church would be a great tool to enforce their views, and so they made efforts to undermine any sort of what they considered to be papism

Yeah but there's no reason there couldn't have been, say, Anglican Benedictines, which would be basically the same as Catholic Benedictines except they believed in the solas and supported Canterbury instead of Rome. So it seems to me the dissolution of the monasteries was primarily political.

Every prince a pope in his own lands. Now instead of one elected spiritual leader chosen based on qualifications you get whoever happened to inherit control of where you live!

Some people grasp on to the idea of living for the highest good and aspiring to it. In many societies this is frowned upon because then you won't work and consoom. People in power like you to work and they want you to want more so that you'll work to get it. Hence, monestaries are intrinsically subversive for secularly organized societies.

Consider the "Protestant work ethic," or prosperity Gospel and Evangelical politicians love of the atheist Ayn Rand. Consider also the Protestant to atheist pipeline.

Protestants really woke up in the 1500s and decided to reenact the Borgia and Medici Papacies across the entire European continent.

their actions wont make sense OP because you are looking at it from a materialistic perspective. their kingdom is not in this world, but in the next. materialists hold onto a world that ends as soon as their brief time here finishes, whereas the faithful are preparing for a world that is forever
