Trade. They import a lot of food. But before the 20th century they were pretty much self sufficient in food. They don't have a huge amount of farmland but the land that there is is very productive, and the climate is good for growing.
You can live on only rice and ONIONS beans. They are amino rich and almost perfect foods. It is said that paddy fields can produce calories 100 times more efficiently than wheat fields.
