The most important factor of sound quality is the frequency response at your eardrum. Your body, your head, your outer ear and your ear canal all modify the frequency response of incoming sounds. With speakers you get them naturally, the speaker itself just needs a flat frequency response. headphones have to assume what those modifications are, it's impossible to make headphones that will sound correct to everyone. Signal to noise ratio, distortion, etc, are all much weaker factors of sound quality.

Which headphones. The frequency response of headphones is all over the place. If the artist made music on headphones he made a mistake. It won't even sound correct to the people using the same headphones.
Headphones can never sound accurate. They don't have the contributions from your anatomy, even for the stuff they don't bypass they don't bypass like your outer ear and ear canal that contribution is inaccurate, what kind of sound source is meant to be 1cm away from your ear, a mosquito? Music is meant to sound from in front of you.

Get real $100-$200 monitor speakers. Place them at your ear level, none of that desk bullshit. Listen. Throw away your headphones in the trash. After that you can delve into room EQ, subwoofers, etc.

If you are listening to music by lowlife garage bands who mix on headphones then I don't think you need to worry about sound quality as it's pretty unlikely your headphones cost more than their recording equipment

I did "blind test" for two audiophiles and they did think 128kbps bitrate was "best audio quality". I also plugged 20 ohm resistor between headphones and they didn't hear any difference. When I told what I did, they got really angry and defensive. From that point on I just use that 128 kbps bitrate and whatever $10-20 headphones because that is minimum that even those "professionals" can't make any difference anyway. Also most of the music producers record with shitty audio hardware so it doesn't even matter.
