A better book, with unreliable narrator and an age gap romance, is Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrian.
You put the book down after a quick read through and think, wow, what a n interesting noble emperor. But the whole tragedy of the romance comes back to you and you wonder what actually happened. You have to rethink this self serving memoir. Was he just as creepy as H.H.?
People DO enjoy the glory and violence of war though. An intelligent person would use a story about that to reflect on the nature of man and decide what kind of person they want to be. A woman would cry about it and demand that it be shunned
If you need your art to moralize for you, you're an irredeemable moron. The story is told by Humbert, Hubert is a depraved pervert and fine with being one. Kind of like today's homos and trannies.
