I'm thinking about cutting my internet for a year to get more reading done.

I'm thinking about cutting my internet for a year to get more reading done. I'll be downloading things I need from the local library and moving them through usb stick if needed. Anyone here done this? Would like to hear some tips.

Physical media is based. If you like it enough, you will find yourself relying on the internet less and less, but there's no point in cutting it completely.

I can't handle the abundance of everything on internet. If I can make books the easiest method of having fun then I will read but as things stand I just consoom garbage on internet

I haven’t done this to the extreme. But I did give myself a two week “attention fast” — yes very gay I know — honestly the very best thing I’ve done, highest returns etc. of any intervention tried before or since. Felt much more content and focussed for a good few months after. Will be giving myself anotherone soon.

Is basic concept: no tech, music, intense ‘dopagenic’ activities *at all* for time. All I did was go walks and read! Very cosy indeed—mind felt less scrambled after and also dropped much bad habits of internet etc.

Sup anon. I think I'll do the same. I notice my brain is too fried to finish any book more than a quarter of a way through. I'll start when you do or when this thread ends or something.

I feel like the biggest challenge in this would be maintaining social connections, work.etc. SO much interaction with the world and other people is facilitated through internet use. Imagine if you meet someone at a bookshop and they ask for your socials or whatever, then you have to tell them, "no, I don't use the internet." or like finding events and whatnot to go to.
Not saying it's impossible, i think it would be worth giving it a go, but it would definitely take some thought and constructive thinking if you want to maintain or cultivate any kind of social life at the same time.

a better place to start imo would be to cut out scrolling, tv shows or other time wasting stuff. since I stopped scrolling facebook a lot of time has been liberated

Yeah, it's more worth it in my opinion to give up social media and time wasting, brainwashing apps than internet as a whole. That'd be impossible if you have a gf, for example. I already have no social media anymore and only call my friends to arrange stuff to do. Now I need to give up Youtube

I do it for about 3 months every year, usually in the Fall. I turn the phone off, stash it in a drawer somewhere. I don’t have a computer so no need to disconnect that. Other than that, I just exercise will power to avoid video games.
