Imperialism reappearance

Why nobody spoke of retaking imperialism after 1945? It seems the idea, that was global, just vanished.

Reclaiming territories should've happened eventually.

imperialism didn't just vanish, it died a slow dead (and arguably is still alive in russia)

      >Imperialism is still alive in Russia! So-what if Russia is 80% ethnic Russian, Vladivostok had a Han-Division of over 5 Chinese people there once 500 years ago! There is also a race of Churka Hapas who I’m pretty sure don’t want to be Russian!

How can't I? The same could be said on the USA government imposing laws over state or communities and be called 'imperialistic', but you haven't done that and would look down at anyone doing it.

Russia is 72% "Russian" on paper but that's after Stalin deported millions of churkas to Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad to man the factories and enforced the Russian language on millions of rural communities. Ethnic Russians most likely hovers around 50% but we'll never know since Putin changed the census classification to count everyone who isnt a protected minority as only Russian. China does the same thing too, only counting minorities if they fall into the lines that Mao painted as protected minorities

Just a modern phenomenon growing in Russia
            >The percentage of total Russian population that did not publicly indicate any ethnic identity in the census increased from 3.94% in 2010 to 11.27% in 2021
People in Russia are beginning to reject the imposed Russian ethnicity and just marking themselves as nothing at an increasing rate, and mind you this is with the mass churka migration of over 12 million central Asians on top

            Anonymous

Because mystery meat churkas identify without an ethnicity doesn't mean Russia is imperialistic. Also those could be Slavs for all you know, or other White ethnic groups.

            Anonymous

Immigrants are allowed to identify as Central Asians which still count as protective minority groups in Russia lol. And that figure is only growing anon, and that’s a good thing, why should you want churkas identifying as Russian when they arent?

      Anonymous

China as well. Both big countries that have a lot of central asian territories only have it because they still keep imperialistic practices over them. Russian and Chinese peripheral territories are literally modern colonies.

Money. The European empires were there for two reasons, to make the Imperial country money, and to make sure that your competitors didn't get the money that could be made from the areas you just colonised.

By 1945 Europe (having torn itself to pieces twice in a generation) had very little money, didn't have the manpower needed to start reconquering/pacifying areas, and that's before you get to the role the Soviets and USA would have played in the conflict if they had tried anything.

I think immigration to France is a whole other discussion but France’s colonial legacy, namely French being widely spoken still in Africa, is definitely a contributor and its continued presence there probably does play a part.

China conquered historically claimed territories post 1945 like Tibet

The reason traditional imperial powers don’t is because they are so heavily entwined with the USA economically and politically

Imagine how France would actually do if sanctioned by the USA because they decided to try to retake Algiers

France tried to but the British stopped them in Syria and the Americans stopped them in Indochina. The French were ruthless in reestablishing control in Syria in 1945 and would've won had Churchill not demanded a ceasefire and moved British troops in to prop up the Syrians.

Puppet regimes abound all over the world. So no imperialism" did not end (why the -ism? It's not a religion philosophy or belief, it's just what happens when weak powers try to ally themselves with bigger powers to use their big power to do something they alone can't.)
The only reason conquering sprees don't happen anymore is it is easier for a rival power than ever to prop up weak fodder - smuggling firearms to random militia is often enough.

WW2 certainly hastened the decline of European colonies, but you could argue that it was always inevitable.
WW2 gave America a very leveraged position over the European colonial powers. America forced the Dutch to abandon Indonesia, and they sided with the Soviets when Britain and France tried to keep Egypt in line.

What language are you all using right now?
Everything you do, and everything you say has likely been shaped by the British empire, because that's the culture you've all been educated in (in some way or another).

America is not a imperialist country regardless of what some loser commie dwarfs say.

Literally the biggest complaint against America boils down to:
      >Well when we don't want to play by their trade rules they stop trading with us! ;(

You can literally just form your own trade block and America won't care (but you will certainly cry about hitting yourself).

Imperialism was necessary in the past, because
    1. first world countries were experiencing rapid population growth. They required lands for fields endlessly, as Malthus warned.
    2. there were so many places where modern legal systems were absent. Companies needed to incite their country to establish territories for their businesses.

    they were resolved by

1a. From mid 20th century on, humans made success in boosting agricultural productivity by applying Haber–Bosch process.
1b. 1st world countries got less and less children as time went by.
    2. Modern legal systems basically prevailed the world.

Imperialism is just a formal acknowledgement of reality. It's the most honest system. In 2024, there are still territorial disputes where 2 or more sides "claim" some piece of land or sea, often between an advanced nation against a poor indigenous one. They try to pressure each other politically and economically, threaten force, and sometimes fight over it. Just like empires, the two sides spin completely opposing narratives to sell the war as noble and virtuous to their subjects.

The only difference is the power of the modern empire is not held by a symbolic monarch or hereditary dynasty asserting their divine right to rule, but within a bureaucracy that serves the nation's elite private citizens.

Pretty much this. I've read about the French African decolonization process and it was basically just a bunch of Cabinet ministers sitting around looking at the projected costs for the black African colonies and going "frick that".

Imperialism was profitable for a good 10-15 years, outside of that it was always in the red. Most European powers like Germany begrudgingly got colonies because their constituency demanded it.

African Imperialism was never profitable afaik, only the Americas were.

South Africa was profitable, but the Brits took over a country already built by Whites and didn't have to invest anything.

The American colonization happened in a different time, the "second wave of imperialism" in the 19th century was just a dick measuring contest and was largely inconsequential to Europe's development. SEA was just as useless as Africa.
