        >In rural villages like this foot-binding continued right up until the 1950s, it wasn't until that point that the government enforced a law banning what it then deemed was a backwards practice.
The Ming didn't stop it. The Qing didn't stop it. The warlords didn't stop it. The RoC didn't stop it.

The RoC pretty much ended foot binding by 1949. Only in shitholes like Yunnan did the communists managed to end it. Another example of authoritarians celebrating their predecessor's achievements.

The surviving creature containing a concentrated toxin. Gu poison was considered a slow-acting poison. It was said to have no taste, allowing unsuspecting victims to go about their normal lives for as long as 10 days before they started feeling ill.

go to Taiwan or Hong Kong to see. China would be a far more interesting place. A lot of Chinese culture has to be taught to mainlanders, but it's just in the background already for people in Taiwan.

        Anonymous

No, even Taiwan is only an imitation - when it suits them. Taiwan has equal amounts of Japanese and Chinese influence and they were never truly part of China proper. Southern Ming ruled it for a few decades, then the Manchu Qing left it to rot.
If you mean Waishengren, I'll agree. But the culture is inextricable from the soil. There's a reason Chinese democracy wouldn't be as easy as a Taiwanese.

That's some of it but a large part is actual paid CCP shills that have been here for years now since Xi's election.

        Anonymous

i don't think they are paid. They are just extremely contrarian teenagers. China is hated across most of the western world now, PEW polls show that pretty strongly as does any major site you visit. Usually these teenagers react to this shit by starting to shill the exact opposite, which in this case means defending China 24/7 online.

A lot of them are not American as well. Many will be from countries like Serbia, Macedonia and these other countries that are not fans of the US. I don't think they even like China that much as much as they hate the US, they just support anyone who may disturb American dominance. They used to shill very hard for Russia but they've just revealed they are a total paper tiger so now they are putting all their chips on China instead. What is weird though is there is actually no need to defend Mao and all of Chinese history, just admit that Deng Xiaoping turned the page and it's been getting better since then. The fact that they even go as far to defend Mao and the cultural revolution makes me believe there is something far more sinister at work, perhaps other hidden sites or discords that are feeding them talking points to spread here.

This is a constant I notice for any Chinese shill in English. You'd swear they'd much rather it be any other country they can piggyback on to for their anti-American views. There's little to zero enthusiasm in genuine Chinese culture being the world's top cultural force that isn't backed with an anti-Western agenda.

wow the socialist intellectuals were wrong again. Who could possibly have foreseen the smartest, ablest and most humble people in the world - college kids who talk to each other with big words a lot - failing to understand even the most basic aspects of human nature?

A few years earlier Mao told intellectuals to speak out against his regime. He then arrested and killed those who did. The ones who were smart enough to smell the trap and keep quiet were basically beaten and/or killed for reading books or studying anything other than Mao Zedong thought during this time period. Who the frick was there to speak out against all of this? Even Zhou Enlai almost lost his head near the end of it all.

I'm talking about the socialist intellectuals who fomented and led all the communist revolutions in the first place. Yes, they did then immediately kill all competing intellectuals, that is definitely their style.

My theory is that the Cultural Revolution was inevitable, given the circumstances of the time. Mao could not have stopped it and he did not start it. What the Cultural Revolution boiled down to was a intra-CCP conflict between the new proles and those whose families had taken part in the CCP from earlier on.
